What do you have to look for, because i always see people looking at the back of the Records but I don't know why..... is there a way to tell if its good or not?

This may be a ridiculously stupid question but hey...

Gladly Appreciate it!!

some guys who dig a lot will learn certain drumers, bassist or horn player they like and look for them on certain tracks on records.

Mainly diggers look from the year the record was made, which record label distributed the record, the only sure way to see if a record is good is to drop the needle. In the digging world go by the old saying "Don't judge a record by its cover" because you might find that one sound in there. hope that helps good luck digging.

It's important that when you decide to start a record collection that you have:

1. A knowledge of previously used samples and artists

-The best way is to read up on producers, their inspirations and also their sample tastes. www.the-breaks.com is also a good place to go for sample information

2. A knowledge of Labels Genres and Dates

-Some artists know a good record by a combination of the Label in which the record was released under, it's date and its genre. (This information is almost always found on the back of the record).

3. A knowledge of your own tastes and inspirations in Samples

-Explore your own inspirations, the artists or producers which you like, see where their samples come from and try to get a feel for the style of sample that they would look for, but most importantly, create your own style (this will probably happen anyway)

4. Good Luck

- I've bought so many records which have little or no material which I am at all interested in or have use for. Try not to fork out a wad of cash for records unless you know their a sure bet.

Other than that. I have a pretty good memory when it comes to song titles. And I also have a lot of e-digging stuff so If I find a record that looks alright I always look at the back. One time I bought a record only to find I had 9 out of the 10 songs on my computer already!!!

Also, Listen to a lot of music. And Don't dismiss records which dont look like they have anything. You have to look at it from the inside not the outside.

Hope I helped!

Peace

Yeah, alot of people look on the back to see the year. As far as 'what to look for'.... when your listening to a sample try to come up with a melody within the first 5-10 seconds..... I've often found this to be helpful when making a beat.

There are no set rules. Generally tho people tend to sample 70s music. Mostly Soul, Jazz and Rock. But I say sample whatever. Diddy was known for sampling 80s pop. A lot of cats are now sampling 90s music. Find what it is that you want to do and do it.
