It's important that when you decide to start a record collection that you have:
1. A knowledge of previously used samples and artists
-The best way is to read up on producers, their inspirations and also their sample tastes.
www.the-breaks.com is also a good place to go for sample information
2. A knowledge of Labels Genres and Dates
-Some artists know a good record by a combination of the Label in which the record was released under, it's date and its genre. (This information is almost always found on the back of the record).
3. A knowledge of your own tastes and inspirations in Samples
-Explore your own inspirations, the artists or producers which you like, see where their samples come from and try to get a feel for the style of sample that they would look for, but most importantly, create your own style (this will probably happen anyway)
4. Good Luck
- I've bought so many records which have little or no material which I am at all interested in or have use for. Try not to fork out a wad of cash for records unless you know their a sure bet.
Other than that. I have a pretty good memory when it comes to song titles. And I also have a lot of e-digging stuff so If I find a record that looks alright I always look at the back. One time I bought a record only to find I had 9 out of the 10 songs on my computer already!!!
Also, Listen to a lot of music. And Don't dismiss records which dont look like they have anything. You have to look at it from the inside not the outside.
Hope I helped!
