...is not an easy task. I'm going to buy my first one and I want a really allround synth that I can use for all kinds of music. I've been recommended either Roland JV-1010, Yamaha CS2x or Alesis QS 6.1. Does anyone have any opiniosns about these, good or bad, or can you recommend something else within the same pricerange (the all cost about the same where I'm going to buy it).

In this price of range, you'll have fun with a Yamaha CS2X. I didn't like the CS1X and the AN1X was too expensive for what it was. The CS2X is a good choice.

As for the JV1010 (Roland) I think that you should try it first in a store to see if you like it. It is a sound module, with less realtime controls, which you may like, but not as fun to get as a first synth.

Now... If you are more into orchestral / real sounding instruments, you may appreciate the Alesis QS 6.1 a lot.

The secret: spend a whole afternoon in a huge music store to try all of their synth in depth and don't listen to the sales person!

Yes that's the secret ! I've spent so much times in music stores....hehehe....you should take a lot of informations everywhere...see the specs...see if you can find the manual on the web...
well I heard the CS1X and didn't like it much...I've got a JV-1080 and I'm really happy with it...great sounds...a lot of midi controllers...big polyphony....and you can add sound cards (analog, classical,...)
Don't know the QS6 and the CS2x....
hmmm...I think it's hard to find a synth which covers perfectly all kind of sounds...
just listen to them, compare the specs...
if it's your first, take one with good polyphony and "multitimbral" (don't know the word)...
2 cts please !

Ive always loved my KORG PROPHECY, its only a monophonic
synthesiser, and is Dubbed -The solosynth, well...... this
is exactly what its best at Ive never heard any single
sound on the the KORG TRINITY series come any where close
to the prophecy sounds, and even though the presets on the Proph are not great, its a gem to program as every controller can be assigned to any synth parameter,

saying that I would swop it for mano1's NORD any day

Im not sure where you can get a look at a prophecy

but Liam from the PRODIDGY used it for most of the lead sounds in the last album.

OH!!!!!! One thing, if your gonna buy a synthesiser , make sure its just a synthesiser, not a workstation

sometimes people try to fool you by boasting about the onboard sequencer, where a synth is concerned try to avoid these little gimmiks they throw in,

my motto...... the more knobs and sliders the better

peace

hey man I don't have a NORD!

I have genuine Access Virus B man, and YES it sounds awesome (how many of my friends producing music are inlove with the Virus line?)

Talking about knobs and sliders: 35 knobs man (all sending and receiving MIDI controls).

I agree with what you said: workstations are a bit confusing to integrate in a studio where you already have a master keyboard and a main sequencer.
