I just finished extracting the main whiny instrument from the chorus of Ohio Players' Funky Worm and I thought that the new technique may be of interest to some of you.

I detailed and illustrated the technique here photosounder.com/blog/2009/03/instrument-isolation-funky-worm.html , but long story short it consists in editing the spectrogram of the sample in question in Photoshop.

Sounds complicated. I'll check it out, but only because I'm a fan of the funky worm.

Ok I read it and I must say I'm pretty impressed. For years people have asked the question "how so I get rid of such and such instrument in my sample and only hear the bass/vocals/saxophone?" It looks like here you've found a method to this that is actually effective. This is the first time I've seen anything like this. Props, man, props. More people should read this thread, and, hell, you might even want to patent this technique or something. This is powerful technology.

Hehe thanks, I probably should patent it but it costs much money to do that . Right now I'm just trying to make the program better to try to make a living out of it.

The true test will be if you can separate a snare from a vocal or other overlapping (in frequency) instruments from each other.

I want to see/hear more.

Yeah that's true. The synth in Funky Worm is pretty distinct frequency-wise from the rest of the song. But the clarity of it was still amazing. I was also digging the synth-less Funky Worm.

It was already overlapping a lot actually. The granny's voice was in about the same range of frequency, and the snares and hithats added much noise to the whole thing.

PhirstN3rd : well, that's only true for the lower harmonics, the higher frequency harmonics get dimmer and dimmer and get horribly mangled into the snares and hihats, to the point you lose track of them entirely, even if you know where they're supposed to be they're just not there (working on an mp3 doesn't help). And there's an infinity of these harmonics, but at some point you just have to let it go hehe.

And yeah the synth-less funky worm was pretty cool too, although you can tell I messed up by the end, I confused bits of granny's voice with the synth, I later fixed that when working on the synth solo.
