Okay.... i was making a beat today, with all the packs i downloaded of the internet and i was like... okay... THATS IT... ITS FINAL... im going to make my own kick clap snare etc.library. Cuz it would make me feel better if i was using my own stuff. So i looked around the net until i found out that prod. like Kanye(THE OLD KANYE) would cut stuff from old breaks, and TWEAK them, i didnt really know what that meant so i assumed it meant EQ it or whatnot. So i scuffled through some old breaks, and cut some kicks and claps, but i use FL STUDIO, and when i cut them from the song, the kick/ clap or whatever, sounds so weak, so i try to use the parametric EQ, and compressor and stuff, but it still sounds so cheesy even when i beef it up.

Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?

Gladly Appreciate help

NO offense but ur probally eq'n wrong and its more than jus eq.. try reverb... compression... layering... gates... alot of producers use breaks its just about knowing wat the drums need to sound "modern" or "hip-hopish".

little do u know those kits u bought were prolly sampled from somewhere too.. Also, just think the more you do to each snare or kick, the more of a chance no one else has a snare that sounds like that

having your own chopped samples from breakbeats is a good thing, mostly what i relate to. i remember the days when eq'in used to be hard as bakin a cake. it has to be precise and not over done. the most useful thing to use are layers. i use Fruity Free Filter, from there on i can tweek the adjustments to make my chopped sample sound criss and live. its easy if you think about it like, say i was on the 4ne to someone but i can only hear them at a certain frequency level, right. so you can tweek the frequency to either low, medium or high or anything in between those. just play around with that and see what happens to the sound. if i havnt explained my self well enough, please let me know. gd luck man

You've got to think about the frequencies that you want to emphasize.

If you're chopping up drums, and you want to tweak a kick, you probably won't want to boost @ 10KHz.

Same with a high-hat. You probably wouldn't want to "add bottom" @ 250Hz.

When EQ'ing a sample as whole, you've got to think about what you want to get rid of.

You want to play your own bass over the sample? Cool. Run a high pass filter @ about 200Hz (as a starting point), and increase as necessary.

Does the sample have too much hiss? Great. Run a low pass filter around 8KHz-9KHz.

okay.... well i tried the fruity free filter

and i cut i cut a kick drum out of the sample and put it at about 10hz like you said, but it still sounded the same... should i just use fruity filter, or that combined with an eq , compressor, bass booster, etc?

and what do you mean by "add bottom"
