hello all. I have been making beats for a while now but I am just starting to sample and it right now sounds like shh I am glad that I found that out before I started saving to get a MPC. Right now I am using FL studio. But onto my question, to be a well known producer in the Music industry should I have sampling down packed? before I actually sat down and realized how much of an art form sampling was (about a year ago) I thought that originals were better and sampling was just taking someone elses idea.

I have been trying my hardest to learn how to sample,,watched several videos on youtube, warbeats ect,ect and I can get how I want it to sound in my head, just cant get it into the DAW! lol

thanks ~1~

Do you want to sample? do what feels right. Plenty of successful producers don't sample, doesn't mean they can't.

Not limiting yourself in any way is a good thing.

sampling is just a way of composing nowadays. i was in the same camp as you about how it's blatent ripping of stuff....but you listen to these more sophisticated hardware producued beats the samples are pretty much just sound thats been reorded re used int a different context....really depends where you look from.

i personally use sampling to get a skeleton structure. to get a key, to get a rhythm or a style going then flesh it out with real music with chords and synths and a big of dub work.

if you listen to somone like j dilla who makes great beats out of a glissando or a loose riff then reverses it, pitches it, replays it, syncs it into the track....that is not what i would consider looping.

if your not comfortable with doing it then dont do it. listen to some sample compilations on youtube. almost always refirms my belif that sampling is possible the biggest single thign that hiphop has brought us.

I used to believe that sampling was a jacker's trade, but start in on it, and it's actually an art form. honestly, hip hop started from sampling, and when you start doing it, you understand that it takes a lot of talent to take something and create an entirely different beast. A true artist doesn't neccessarily need a sample to make something happen, but that doesn't mean that art can't be comprised of samples. Feel me?
