I'm not asking where do you find your samples, I'm asking what are some techniques you use to find them. Do you just randomly pull a vinyl out of the crate a listen to it until you find something that you like? Do you like know what you want before you start working? What are some techniques that you use? Because sitting down for a few hours listening to records is what I find myself doing a lot. This is very time consuming and I often down even feel like making the beat anymore by the time I find something. Any advice is appreciated.

Im going diggin today so here goes:

1) Always check the vinyl itself, look and you can find any quiet breaks in the music

2) Names - After digging and being a fan of music for a while you start to build up a database of names...you might see something like Drums - Brian Bennet which makes you want to pick the record

3) Instruments - If there is a sleeve inside or information on the back then read and see if theres any instruments you like...personally I enjoy all instruments but there might be something obscure that will catch your eye i.e Sitar, Thumb Piano, Moog

4) Year...you can sort of get an idea of the sound quality and some timbral of tonal aspects of the recording by the date...you may also have favourite years...mine is possibly 77' off the top of my head

5) Cover - They say never judge a book by a cover but with art (even books) I sometimes do and it seems to work for me...Art is a total package and experimental or serious artists will always want all aspects of their world to be expressive...this isnt always a good lead though, keep in mind 1-4 whilst looking for just covers...

6) Price - Always go for the cheap ones that you think may have something on rather than buying the one ill looking record that is expensive as hell if you are on a budget....if you are rich buy anything lol remember any record can be used in some way

hope this helps somewhat

usually just go with your gut feeling

I will make a post later about anything I found and why I chose it if you like...I would like to ramble about it anyway...big passion of mine

peace

oh and as far as technique I just build up a collection of sounds...I think later on I may label some as in drums, sfx, keyboard part, loop...etc

As far as the creative process I havent sampled from vinyl much but I assume its gonna be the same if not better due to the sound quality

I usually chop up some stuff and date a folder

I will always come back to stuff...re-chop some stuff

You dont have to do everything at once

if you dont feel articulate and patient try just practising keyboards, go out and freestyle, go to an art gallery

come back later have a cup of tea and sit down with something and have a go

Sidebar: Even the mediocre records are useful, you just have to have an ear, the intelligence, and know how on how to use it. Don't fall into the "rare" hype.

i usedta dig... but now i just grab and chop... any song/sample can be converted into Hip Hop form... u are spendin way too much time searchin... try usin the 1st few records u play... just bcuz u dont get nothin 2day doesnt mean u wont get anything 2morrow... chop it different ways... 4-8-16-32 times... cut some parts off... reverse some parts, add echo... people that sample know that its much more work than "non samplers" give credit to.
