I forgot to mention EQ. I don't EQ until I'm mixing the beat, so I know what frequencies to cut/boost, after EQing all of the other elements of the track.
I usually run a bandpass EQ at the end, so it won't muddy up my highs or lows that I'm implementing into the track.
