I know to make these kind of classic east-coast tracks you need to find a grimey sample, get some nice drums, and filter the bassline...So, this is what i tried to do. The bassline sounds odd though. What else could I do to spice up this track?

thanks

"If the the drums hit too hard it will take the mellowness vibe [out of] the whole track and make it stupid sounding. I know that may not make a lot of sense to today's producers aka fans with clout, but louder and harder isn't always the way to go." -Marol

the sample's got to have enough bass to begin with to properly filter in a bassline, sounds like it doesnt have enough, or you didn't eq it properly. Throw on a little compression after the EQ to bring up the low frequencies. Also try slowing down the sample a bit, seems a little off beat with the drums IMO

Most producers tend to boost around 150hz for their filtered basses.

Good luck fixing this up

this information is wrong. compression only affects the dynamics (meaning volume) of what you're applying it to, not the frequencies. Putting an EQ before the compressor isn't gonna make the compressor change any of the frequencies.

I've used this method with success on occasion using an MPC. After throwing on a low pass filter then raising the resonance of the sample, its possible to get a fuller bassline with an EQ+compression combo, of course compression alone will do nothing
