you don't need an amp and a mic (although that's an option). You can use a preamp with a hi-z input or you can use a DI box. Some soundcards also come with a guitar input.

The b**** in u makes u run for cover when I spit at u. Man to man zone Allen Iverson couldn't dribble through. Rapid-fire syllables. U gotta bribe me wit' a mil or 2 to keep me from killin' u with the lyrical.

Canibus

there's a whole market of new products for recording guitar straight into your comp check out line 6's line of boxes. They come with software that emulates (poorly or decently depending on who you talk to) standard classic amps and/or whatever sound you're looking for. The reason most people do the amp and mic setup is becuase they're not just looking to record the guitar, but the way in which the guitar sounds coming through that amp and that speaker.

i've heard good things about the line 6 toneports, but haven't used them myself.

All your really trying to do is get sound into your computer/DAW.

You could mic the amp is one way or you could go direct into your soundcard/recording box.

The mic'd amp sounds great but man, you need to be in place (volume tolerant) where you can let the amp work.

provided you have some type of audio interface, you've got enough to make noise.

You can plug directly in using a DI box or with an effects box, but in my opinion those don't really compare in any way with the tone of the guitar through a decent amp.

The Line 6 Tone port definitely Is a sweet Option. They have their UX1 option, with one input, The UX2 option it 2 guitar inputs and 2 mic inputs and the UX8 which has I think 16 inputs. They range from $59.99-$499.99 at most websites. Also an M-Audio Box works as well. I just prefer line6 because I purchased their POD X3 live for my guitar modelling. I have the Gearbox software that comes with the Tone ports, it is bloody amazing, highly recommended for getting sweet tones. Even if you are tone creating impaired, there are many presets that sound amazing.

If the Lord as my light and my path, who then shall I fear?
