What's good?

Just got a guitar a few days ago. There's a lot of songs I want to learn, but I'd like some suggestions on songs that are fun to learn. They don't necessarily have to be easy for a beginner.

I'm mostly looking for old - school r&b/soul songs with guitar parts and hip-hop songs (not necessarily old school HH).

But suggestions in any other genre are welcome too.

The b**** in u makes u run for cover when I spit at u. Man to man zone Allen Iverson couldn't dribble through. Rapid-fire syllables. U gotta bribe me wit' a mil or 2 to keep me from killin' u with the lyrical.

Thanks. I been there. I have been learning Idlewild blue http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/...d_blue_tab.htm, Nancy Sinatra's Bang Bang, Forgot About Dre and Nas' The Message.

I am pretty good at figuring out stuff by ear too, so I just wanted to know what other people on here thought were good songs to learn, since this sub-forum is dead.

I'm learning the Wolf Marshall method at the moment. Thanks for the links tho. I'll check it out.

darko, 2 songs you want to look at for r&b.

I would include selections from Mayfield, but I don't think there's much info or tabs/chord charts on his stylings.

But a song on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album has all the voicings and stylings used in old and modern r&b - "Have you ever been...". It's the second song. the hammer on/off voicings, fragments of chords, are classic r&b guitar. Even some of the voicings (chords) found in songs like "Castles Made os Sand" would be good for your arsenal.

The other songs you may want to check out are any of the Isley Brothers stuff.

But just like anything musical, it's not just notes, it's rythym and timing. So play with your eyes (charts/tabs), your ears, and soul.

That's how I learned, I listened to my dad's old cd's/records of these masters.

Ernie Isley, Mayfield, and Hendrix are the holy trinity. Oh! can't forget Eddie Hazel.
