...out of respect to their music?

anyone can take someone's music and make a cool beat out of it...but to actually be able to play what was being sampled is something you that takes years of practice.

I DO sample, and quite frequently, but there are a handful of artists I simply cannot sample because of their talent and quality of music they produce.

I guess I would aprove of doing a cover of a song (like an interpolation of a melody) rather than chopping the sh!t out of their work.

1. The Beatles (I grew up on them. Making a beat out of their music just feels wrong)

2. Jaco Pastorius (I heard Cannibal Ox's Pidgeons, and it's a crazy beat but the original is so good. They sampled "Portrait of Tracey", a goddamn masterpiece.

3. Hendrix (Dude....unless you crafted the most insane track of all time using a Jimi Hendrix sample, there's no excuse.)

I'll probably be a hypocrite and end of sampling these guys some day, but until then they are off limits.

who are artists you can't sample

I agree with all of yours, plus pretty much any great classic rock groups: Cream, The Doors, Jethro Tull, ELO, Queen

Ah damn...I was like "yes, yes, yes, ye....**** I sampled them"

ELO always has the sickest string sections, it's begging to be sampled! haha

The artist i've raped the most, then decided it wasnt right is got to be Kate Bush. inmho the greatest female vocalist of all time....(i know, big words.) but to be honest. ive made about 25 beats utlizing her voice or a track in someway. and ive shelved 99% of them. you can hear her sneak in, here and there but never in the obvious ways, that she begs for.

i could go on about the time i was high and her song was literally telling me 'don't go through with this"

Somedays I wonder if Joe Pass would've approved of me sampling him. I don't really look at sampling in a way of "who I can't sample", but if I do sample an idol of mine, it has to be on point. I don't half ass on those types of samples. I do a lot of layering also. Sometimes I won't even finish the sample..... I'll just pull out my guitar or the keys and improv over top of it. I don't feel bad, but I do treat every chord and lick from Joe Pass like it's fine china.
The only way I'll feel extremely bad about sampling him is if someone was spitting some real ignorant **** over it, BUT If he came from the grave tomorrow and told me to stop.... I'd quit and would probably feel horrible.

ah **** i thought i was the only one who raped kate haha

She's really talented. She has that nice 1980 feel where it's not crazy with the drum machines and still has that disco quality but the quality isn't grimey like 75. 1980-82 were AWESOME years
