Hey FP... how does Mad Lib get that grimey/dirty sound out of his samples... i tried warmers, and other filters, but i can never get it to sound as dope.

A lot of that comes from using grimey ass samples. Along with using low sample rates and of course the equipment.

You could try and pick up a S-900, just to run your samples through.

personally i find a lot of madlibs mixing to be dry and overcompressed. nonetheless.. when its at high volume it bumps nice. im not sure he does much processing on his samples.. maybe some compression and eq but i wouldnt think madlib to be one to screw around too much with processing.. he seems to love the original records too much for that

tried a bitcrusher vst to help you get that sound?

Im not sure what madlib does, but running your samples through an analog piece like an s900 or even an mp and boosting the levels as high as you can without clipping will give you some of that crunch.

He uses a SP-1200 usually. Apart from that, not really sure. You could try layering filtered samples or something.

Also, on albums like The Unseen, he recorded everything to a cassette multitrack...
