Hey FP! whats goin on guys...

I just wanted to bring up a topic that I've been wondering about for a long time. I know this is the sampling forum, but ive never really posted elsewhere, and I feel the sampling forum is home to me. Ontop of that, I am familiar with most of the people on this section of the forum, so I feel more comfortable talking to this side of the forum. If this topic is offensive or against the rules, moderators can take it off, no hard feelings. I just hope you let it stay, because i think we are all mature adults who can handle a topic like this.

I just wanted to get a stance on peoples opinions on this subject. It seems the Islamic world has overlapped with a lot of the hip hop world. There are a number of muslm rappers out there, who either openly talk about there religion, or dont. Either way, they are still muslims.I wanted to bring this up because The current political situation, of Obama, whom many people favor as a candidate, became weary of him once the world found out he was from an Islamic background. Muslims have had to live in constant pressure after 9/11, and being a muslim is seen as an accusation against people. After Hillary Clintons administration revealed Obamas background, it kind of backfired on them and people saw it as a weak political move. I just dont understand why people see being a muslim (which hes not) or being from a muslim background, as such an accusation. What are your opinions on this matter regarding hip-hop? Would you still view a hip hop artist the same way if you found out they were a muslim? some famous muslim artists include Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Ice Cube, T-Pain, Akon, Napolean (from outlawz), Jermaine Jackson (Michael Jacksons brother, possibly michael jackson as well, hes started looking into islam), immortal technique, cat stevens and some other famous people including Dave Chappelle, mike tyson and muhammad ali.

Sorry for the long topic, but i just wanted all your thoughts. Id rather get it from you guys, because i see the sampling section as a community itself within FP.

nirvana

but apart form that you are totally right there is a stigma that muslim is a painful word just like black was 70 years back.

it has some other meaning to it.

and about obama they tried to make out that he was a muslim majorly becuase of his 'strange' sounding name. he is a very strong christian from what i heard. it's becuase his dad was kenyan that he has a islamicesque name.

i think what makes me so angry was that he was wearing ethiopian wiseman claothing which is very similar to abyssinia traditiontal dress (somthing that haille selassie would of worn)...then saying he is muslim
pure stereotyping

also i beleive it was the u.s goverments idea to make him go over there and obliged to wear it

what can i say im from london so you should be enlightign me

Well, his islamic background has been proven, and isnt a hoax. his father was a muslim and obama was educated in a "madrasah" or islamic school in indonesia. Heres a picture of back when he was in africa. Do you think the cruelties and injustices black folk felt back 70 or so years ago can be related to how muslims in america feel now? especially black muslims?

Obama himself is not a muslim and is a member of a highly controversal christian church (whole other thread for that). Also, the reason he wore that was because politicans tend to wear clothes of the culture they are visiting. Not saying there's anything wrong with being Muslim, just saying the man deserves to have people believe him when he says he's follows a certain faith.

i said stigma thats completly different i didnt say muslims are getting hanged as a scapegoat or dont have the abilty to not cross the road when a non muslim comes near for **** sake i said that the word muslim has the feel of terrorist or outsider to it.

i said the word black as a derogetory way in that it was exactly the same as the word muslim has today.

I personally don't care at all about anyone religion until it is pushed on to me. I've worked with Muslim rappers before. I've worked with Christian rappers as well. However, i would probably not work with anyone who actually goes out of there way to rap about their religion (like "Christian Rap as a genre). I also do like to be around people who speak too often about a religion you arn't involved in. Just in a general sence. So with hip hop, i wouldn't listen to anything, nor work with anyone, who's focal point, persona, or image didn't extend much past their religion. Otherwise, again, i don't care. That's me personally.
