I saw a post about this already but it was like a month since anyone had posted in it and a question was left hangin. Anyway, I just got my first bass and when I was playing it in the store it seemed alright except the strings were ringing and very loose, I thought it was because it needed to be tuned. Except when I tuned it when I got home, nothing changed. It sounds like the strings are rubbing against the fret dividers but I'm not sure. It's an Ibanez gsr...any help or info would help. Thanks...

You may want to take it to a tech who can check it out and set the bass up for you.

It could be your left hand technique or it could be the action is out of wack.

Might try handing the bass off to someone who plays and see if the bass still buzzes for them.

If not, it's your left hand fretting technique. Don't fret on the fret. Fret between the frets. pressing down right on top of the frets will cause the bass string to buzz.

I don't do that...but thanks for the advice. I guess I'm going to take it back and get it fixed. If it needed to be set up I wonder why he didn't do it or tell me it needed to be?

I think it really depends on your playing style, so not everyone's guitar is going to be set up the same and still be the best set-up for that individual. They'll prolly have to make adjustments on the truss rod, but like the other guy said, take it somewhere and get it set-up in a way that will go with your playing style.
I have to do the same with mine as well, there's a lot of buzzing. I've never taken it to a pro to set it up for me though, i've been spending more time trying to learn my electric guitar. But good luck with your problem man

This definitely sounds like a setup issue. It sounds like the string action is too low, which means you'll need a bridge and a truss adjustment. Any guitar shop should be able to do it for around $45 US. Maybe $75 depending on where you live.
