I often hear people criticize the eq and effects in the mpc. Right now i am working with an mpc1k and a turntable, no mixer or anything. Could someone please explain the mpc's shortcomings and suggest another option for eq'ing, applying effects and mixing..thanks.

Phuck what others say, if it works for u, then use it. If everyone is using all the same sht, everyone is going to sound alike. And don't worry bout what that box CAN'T do, worry about what it CAN do. Pete rock made whole albums in just the mpc alone, and it was an older one then u have, so u should be more then capable of doin what u need to do with that box. I'm curious tho, how r u samplin from the turntable with no mixer, does the TT have a line-level output? Remember man, focus on the positive, not the negative, or u'll only get negative results.

I haev used an mpc for many years, and I feel that mixing outside of the mpc is much better. I used to always use the mpc and just output from there. But effects in other programs are simply much better than the mpc. I currently mix in protools and am able to get things much more crisp and clean, I feel the mpc tends to muddy things up.

but, it really is a preference. If you are going to top notch quality, you probably want to outsource the mixing, if you are just going for decent sound, you will be allright mixing in the mpc.

how do you go about mixing from your mpc to pro tools? Do you do individual tracks for your instruments?

Right now, I have the 8 outputs on my mpc2000xl. so I simply track them out that way. When there are more than 8 outputs, I will add a cue marker to each track, like a 4 count of a snare or something, in order to make sure everything lines up. this is the way I did it before the 8 outs as well. Just soloing tracks, 4 count snare record the track. It was tedious, but it worked well.

I would suggest learning how to use the midisync though if you are using protools or something similiar, it would make things much easier. For some reason though, I simply can't comprehend midi.

but to anwer more direct.. yes track per instrument, even brreaking drums up into hihat track, snare track, kick track, bass, horn, etc.
