Most known brand names have basic cheap models for beginners. Don't mess with generic Chinese copies unless you can physically try them out and compare to more expensive models. I've seen copies that range anywhere from strings on a piece of wood to exceptionally good. But you can't check if you're buying online. So.. if you buy online, pay extra for a brand name to be sure of quality.

And also, read about different bass types before buying: http://www.tunemybass.com/bass_guita...questions.html

the choice for a beginner would be something for from yamaha, fender, or ibanez. best bang for the buck in that sub $500 category.

thanks for the links...def want a basic 4 string fretted bass....

and either i couldn't find the basses off that list or they were out of my price range....the bronco is right in my price range...i went to guitar center to try it out but it buzzed and rattled something awful...well i guess you get what you pay for....either i'm going with the bronco or the $100 rogue because for $50 more the bronco i can't imagine would be much better...thanks

Buzzing of strings doesn't even matter that much. You won't hear it when it's amplified (in my opinion). But if some mechanical part rattles, like the tuning heads, then it's trouble. Try some other local music shops. If it plays comfortable and the sound is ok, then it's all that matters.

A Made in Mexico (MIM) Fender Jazz or P bass would be nice. Made in Japan is really inconsistent in quality, and you definitely would have to check them out in the store. MIM you could take a chance with an online order and have a reasonably good chance of getting the workmanship you need.

I like the rogues. I used to work for mf but I liked them they're better than fenders for the price.
