People do things for different reasons.
I had no interest in learning instruments before. When I was a kid, my parents made me learn clarinet and piano for a little while, but I never had any interest in it to practice. Now I'm 24 and I consciously want to learn the bass and guitar. I made electronic music for years, but I always wanted to be able to express it on stage, live.. so my reason is:
- to perform live
- to compose songs with guitar+bass
I even heard about some professional musicians who started because their brother's band "needed a drummer".. But I believe every reason is OK as long as the result is good.
Why did YOU start learning your instrument? And what is your level now?

Ever since a kid, I was interested in music. But I grew up poor (hell, I still am! lol), so I didnt have means to take lesson. Till I got to this school in Atlanta in 3rd grade and we learned how to play the Recorder (yes it is an instrument...a minor one). When I got to 5th grade, I joined a band class and had the opportunity to use school instruments. I was interested in Drums, Saxophone, and Clarinet, but I chose to play Sax bein that it was the most prevelant in Jazz music. And I've been lovin it since.
I now want to learn the drums, Piano, and guitar (im gettin one this week!! YES!!! lol). I cant wait to learn and bein that Im in college, I can take those classes as electives. So Im actually killin two birds with one stone!
Gotta love school! :+)

My story is kind like CribEnt's I started playing drums because one day at church the drummer didn't show up. Well my dad who was the paster handed my a pair of sticks and ever since then I've been playing drums. Never owned a drumset until last year though because I could never afford it. And as for guitar I play that because I love classical Flaminco music. I'm hispanic and my dad was a pastor to a spnish church. Well in that upbringing all I heard was a lot of old spanish songs. So that and carlos santana being my biggest inflence I have a very Latinesque style.

i started learning trumpet because i wanted to be in a skacore or hardcore punk band. this wish came true.
i started learning guitar because i wanted to be in a skacore or hardcore punk band, and i wanted to master the "smells like teen spirit riff." both of these wishes came true.
i started rapping because i wanted to be able to freestyle and write stuff for myself. this wish came true.
i started making beats because i wanted to get energized electronic sounds and beats the way rza and dre did. i get closer and closer to "wish come true" with this one every day.

I wanted to learn the keys to make my own beats better beats for my own lyrics. Now I love learning the piano amd try ad play as much as possible, my song writing has definatly changed because of this. I now wanted to learn the guitar because I love some acoustic guitar chords over hip hop drums and now my song writing has again changed. Now its on the the bass because I love the feel of playing a bass and can get more creative then playing a bass sound module on the keyboard. Slowly but surely im moving onto real instruments and hopefully once I get the Moog lil Phatty all I'll need software for is the occasional off beat synth and strings.

Soon you can join The Roots!
But yeah, I'm pretty much the same. Expressing music with live instruments gives you a whole new feeling of enjoyment.

I play a ton of instruments. I started with piano lessons, but at the time wasn't really in to it at all. I started playing trumpet in 4th grade because I wanted to be in the band. Did French horn the next year too because we needed one and it played about the same as trumpet. Learned drums in 7th grade because I liked them. Picked up violin around the same time because my aunt had one, so I just did it for the hell of it.
In high school I picked up bass because another aunt had one and couldn't play it anymore because she had wrist problems. After three months of bass I could play just about anything I heard on the radio, so when I found my mom's old guitar in the closet I started on that. I picked up baritone sax in high school too. I had played a little bit of clarinet and flute, but I never really mastered getting a good sound out of them because I was used to trumpet, which takes so much more air. Bari sax had the same fingerings but took a lot more air, so it was a good match. I learned a little bassoon around the same time, but it wasn't that interesting to me. I did cello sophomore year of high school and loved it, but didn't have the money to buy one so I gave that up. Learned upright bass freshman year of college because my bassist got carpal tunnel and couldn't play hers. Picked up mandolin and banjo after that too, but I'm still only average at them.
Right now I play guitar best, and I'm solid on bass too. I have rock solid metronome time on drums, but I keep it pretty simple and just play grooves. I only get to play trumpet once or twice a year, but if I practice a couple weeks before I can tear it up. I'm a little sloppy on piano, but I do well as the 2nd keyboard/synth player in a group and I can play some solid key bass. Haven't played violin, cello, or bari sax in years. I could probably still do sax, but not the other two because I have no bowing technique anymore. I still have some upright bass and French horn skills but don't play either all that much these days. Same with mandolin and banjo, but I can get through a gig on any of those four.
