My brand new bass sounds like "bzzz!" while I want it to sound like "BOOOO!"
This metallic sound is great for punk rock and metal, but I want something more soft. My old bass is real trash, but i like the way it sounds.

The video shows what I mean. Would changing strings help?

You might try a different preamp. Also flatwound strings are good for a more "round" vintage sound. Tone can be changed by the preamp drastically though and thats what I would change...

which bass is the new one, the black?

Usually changing the strings is good for people who want a thick slap sound. That's why some guys change their strings every month or so so they stay metallicy and sharp.

I haven't changed mine since july, they're doin pretty good. I have trouble with getting a good tone in general though.

Another tip I do is muting the bass with your hand. I don't know how you would do that, but I rest the fat of my right hand on the strings and sort of pluck with my thumb. Probably not the BEST way, but it gives me kind of a fatty sound. Haven't recorded with it recently though.

Yeah, the black one.
Thanks for the tips.

Actually, I think now that I played it for 3 days straight, the noise is slowly disappearing.. I also played with EQ on guitar and amp settings. And I did experiment with muting.. I think usually funk guitar is played like that. But to play long notes, I mute with my right palm at the bridge and quickly remove palm (otherwise the muted note will not sustain). I also use a pick when muting.
Another alternative is to mute string by pressing on frets with your left hand. Instead of pressing normally, just before the fret, press on top of it with your flat finger (instead of finger straight down). It also creates a dull sound.

Try it, the sound is cool!

A TON of your sound comes from your fingers. Make sure you are plucking with the meatiest parts of your fingers (the middle of the pads). Also make sure you are pressing the string down into the body and not pulling it horizontally. This will give you a MUCH better sound.

You don't want to cut mids too much because that's what gives the bass presence. Don't add too much bass eq either, it'll get muddy fast. Dial back treble just a bit.

I can't comment on muting because it's all second nature to me now.

And if you can add tubes or tube simulation anywhere in your single chain it'll help out.

99 percent of your sound is in your hands though. Take the time to learn proper technique.

Yeah, I recently noticed that. When I just started playing, I didn't hear the difference.
Thanks for the tips.

And yeah, the buzz did go away some after a while of playing. I also took sand paper and sanded down the bottom part of the strings a bit, hehe.

Its common with new guitars/basses for it to sound like you say. they need to be broken in. thats why the value goes up the older they get. You don't want new strings, you want used strings. the more you play the closer you'll get to the sound you want. I think it has something to do with the vibrations against the frets, so the more wore down the strings and frets are the less bzzz you get. Also, do you play w/ a pick? that will definitely give you more of that metallic/ punk rock sound. playing w/ fingers makes a smooth, jazzy sound.

Why buy two basses if you want them to sound (bassically) the same?

The b**** in u makes u run for cover when I spit at u. Man to man zone Allen Iverson couldn't dribble through. Rapid-fire syllables. U gotta bribe me wit' a mil or 2 to keep me from killin' u with the lyrical.

The old one wasn't mine, I just borrowed it for a month.

Anyway, it turned out to be true. The longer you play, the warmer the tone. I have yet to try flatwound strings.
