I ran by the original sample by CAN, and you can hear the melody of the original version is there.. but the actual song by Kanye, is very different. Are more artists using interpolations/replaying the songs, rather than using the original sample? Do you think this will this slowly faze out the idea of making a complete sounding song without using extra instruments?

people dont replay samples to make it seem like they put some "work" to make the beat.. or to feel good inside like they accomplished something.. or just to pay professions to play it note for note..

they actually do it because usually what is being sampled.. from vinyl.. isn't clear enough.. for modern day music.. in which the quality is veryy high.. also.. the other reason its done is because of sample clearances reasons..

sometimes.. replaying the sample can make a beat easier or cheaper to clear..

so the benefit of it is to have a clear sound, cheaper clearance issue.. then it looks like the full advantage is to replay your own sample.

not saying what you said isn't true, but i don't understand the full argument of interpolating to avoid sampling fees. if you're a major producer getting paid say $25,000 for a beat and they want to take 50% of the for sample clearanc issue.. isn't that an easy choice to say instead of giving up 1/2 of that, i'll only give up $500 to a local high school piano teacher that can probably interpolate that beat for me for nothing? if so, everyone would do that.

When you sample a record, you pay two fees to clear it. you pay for using the song, and you pay for using the actual recording. You can avoid paying the song fee if you flip the sample well enough, and you can avoid paying the recording fee if the sample is interpolated. If you do both, you don't have to pay anyone and you get to call yourself a composer and walk around saying samplers don't have any musical talent. I'm not sure which fee is usually higher so I don't know if there is one that people prefer to pay.

the mechanical license is a compulsory fee, so you can try negotiating for a better rate, but if the publisher doesn't want to give you permission, you pay the set rate and they can't stop you. there is no compulsory rate for the recording though, so if they don't want you to use a sample, you're SOL. one of the other reasons why producers tend to interpolate.

stupid song btw . . . gets me angry that they would occupy space on an LP with such garbage . . . and this is coming from a Kanye and Mos Def fan . . . Interpolate, guess I'll have to read the dictionary located in the getting started section to know what the hell that means . . . lol

ok, my bad, determined what it meant by the text of the previous postings . . . (at work, didn't read all the posting fully) . . . very good discussion here.

While it is more epensive, if you are in love with the craft, the truth is, the best beats, while some on here would argue are straight rips of a chorus, the best beats I've heard, are a collage of interpolation and complimentory samples, with a balance of both. This seems to take the most advantage of the digital soundscape.
