I know you're out there. What do you use? what's your philosophy? do you play out or in the studio? play sessions for others, or just your own stuff?
bass is one of the _most_ versatile stringed instruments, and though the techniques and equipment may differ with the different genres we're into, the basics are always the same. we lay down the groove.
my background in the instrument started in seventh grade, with a simple Ibanez P-bass style instrument and a crate 10 watt practice amp. 9 years later, i haven't increased my collection that much. i have a 1980's Fender P-bass that's been with me for about 6 years and is strung with nylon wound string bass strings. it's what i use when i want a really warm sound.
just recently i bought an Eastwood Guitars hollowbody bass, because i'm really into the sound Peter Hook of joy division/New Order gets with his hollowbody. With this instrument, it's less about the bass and more about the punchy bright tone, but it's still got bottom end.
how 'bout ya'll

rookie bass player here... learning fast with the help of a great teacher....
I've just got a crappy generic SX collection bass at the moment for learning, but as soon as funds allow and i've improved im going for a music man stingray (love the feel of that thing)....
Its by far the most fun instrument ive ever touched and within a couple of weeks of starting i was already recording with it ...

if i ever get a jazz bass again, it'll be that Geddy lee bass.
1. Rush is awesome
2. It's heavy as ****
3. It has something called a 'badass II bridge' which is pretty cool. don't know what it does, but i want something like that on my instrument.
this is cool to read. keep it coming 'yall.

Didn't know you played bass, always see you on the hardware synth forum
I play sessions and live, have been on a few small tours. My main axes are Ken Smith 6's (2). I also have an old P-Bass with flatwounds and a Fender Jazz 5 (active) ... For fretless work, my favorite is a Gary Willis Signature 5 String...The tone is unbelievable.
Amplification: I like Ampeg and SWR ...Kind of curious about Eden's .
That's all, good night.

I just started about 7 months ago and have been teaching myself but I feel my progression has hit a wall so I want to find a teacher. I wish I had picked up bass sooner, there's no better feeling than grooving down on that low end! ya digg?

I'm a bass player first and I play sessions for local hip hop producers from time to time. Doing that got me into the idea of producing rather than just slinging my bass.
I play a 5 string steinberger and a 4 string peavey patriot with flatwounds. My first piece of studio equipment is going to be a Zoom SB-246 Streetboxx that my girl is gonna buy me for christmas. I decided on a drum machine because it can be used for ideas for beats and as a practice tool for my bass playing. When i get my computer and software up and running I can still use the Zoom in the studio or sample it and sell it later on. I think in the future I will get an MDP 16. It seems like a good idea if you plan on sampling and using live instruments, right?
My bass influences include Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Tone!), Preston Crump (Outkast), and LaMarquis Jefferson (TLC, Lil Jon) to name a few
