Just wondering..
I had a love for the sound since i was young and i first heard "Cant knock the hustle" I didn't know what to call it tho. I used to describe it as the underwater sound. I used to hear that **** in my sleep!
I just recently started to do it with my own beats tho.. does anyone else use it? if so post em so i can hear!

oh.. another thought..

I don't believe that the "low end theory" and what i hear in Pete rocks joints "Its a love thing" is the same thing. If my ears are trained properly.. in that particular song (its a love thing) Pete rock uses a Phaser effect, and a low pass filter.. and some reverb too..

Right or wrong..

I think theres more to it than just filtering.

can't knock the hustle gives me goosebumps man , that low end theory definitely brings boom bap to mind. I do it sometimes, but i use it to bring the bass out in a sample, basically, not to make it sound like its underwater

Its just low frequencies driving the groove, it has nothing to do with the specific sound or filtering of the sample. Just let the bottom set the tone for the track and everything else come secondary. Pick up a bass, its not specific to sampling

I listened to ATCQ album when I was in high school for the first time and loved it. I recognized that most of the songs had the same type of groove as the intro. I never got what the title meant until I got into producing like 2-3 months ago lol (its my 3rd year of college)

That underwater sound you're talking about is a clever way for people working in 12bit samples to filter out tinny sounding highs and isolate the lower frequencies which usually stay more intact in lo fi sampling or time stretched samples.

I use low end theory on all my tracks to take the low freq's from the sample I'm using. I compress, eq and drop where needed. This is how I make my bass(line) track in a song.

the sound you're referring to, is not just a low passed filter, its also usually combined with a band pass, and then the LFO attack is modulated, to give a murky, wah wah type effect. you can raise and lower the band pass to change the level of the mids...

the right sample makes a big difference.

i got tired of enveloping the filters on my mpc, so i bought a guitar pedal to run samples thru, and i use the wah wah pedal to modulate samples.

theres actually a preset on my pedal that i think is called "underwater".

listen to this dilla instrumental..this is one form of modulating filters i LOVE....
