Alright, so nobody seems to know the answer to this. I have the AL-PL50 turntable. It has built-in preamp and apparently it doesn't get any louder than -6 to -3 db tops.

I have contacted Audio Technica and it is confirmed that is as loud as it gets. So now my question is should I get a separate preamp and bypass the built in one? Is this necessary or should I just normalize the end result. Pros/cons? Damn I wasted money on this piece of crap.

Normalizing should be fine. I often record samples that might peak much higher but the part i actually use might be around the same levels. If you have a mixer with a phono preamp, or even just a studio mixer (hook you line out up though), then, sure use it. Then you take one step out of the equation. The quality you will get from recording it hotter is pretty negliable with vinyl. If it was vocals or instuments, that's a different story but with vinyl, it's not something i would worry about personally.

^ Co-sign. Much higher and you'll be clipping, why would you want to record it any louder? I actually record at a lower level than that for obvious reasons. If you're recording at -3dBFS then you're using up most of your headroom, makes no sense. I record eveything at around -15dBFS (vocals even lower), this leaves plenty of headroom and can be turned up in the later stages.

^^Agreed, you should be fine at -3 or -6db. You're recording 24-bit, so that's pretty much where you want it (or lower as Street said)

At least you got a turntable homie.

I wrote this song a long TIME ago...(back in '93 or '94)
