Hey,

I have just gotten into sampling after years of just composing (with the occasional sample if I hear it on MP3 or something and think it would be dope). I know the basic idea is to find something no one has heard before, but I got like 4 records the other day and found very little to work with.

I am mostly looking for orchestral or instrumental "trippy/psychadelic" sounding material. One hits are good material I have found, but that's about it. I do not favor sampling Jazz for some reason. I find it easier to sample the other (not dealing with drums is also a plus). Basically I am finding it hard when I am at my record store (which is rediculously unorganized anyway) to find this type of "spacey" material, or even orchestral stuff that is not as well known (and not quite so "classical", which is sometimes hard to work in a hip hop beat) as the Bachs and Beetovens.

Can anyone who samples this type of stuff guide me as to what type of genre this would be and any clues as to what to look for other than multicolored covers with mushrooms and fairies on the front?

Ok, people will talk about digging like it's some scientific deal. I think the best way is to keep buying records. First, you will appricate it when you find it, secondly, when you buy up all of one artist, you arn't stuck. That's how i learned. I just buy about 10-20 records a month or so and after even a month or two, you start to learn what's going to suit your taste. I've rarely walked out of a record store with most of what i picked up being very sampleable. Somethimes it's straight crap too, you have bad digs.

you have to think out side the box young playa. you may think you didnt hear anything to work with, but someone else might hear the dopest sample ever. Grab a captain morgan and coke (if you're old enough), turn the lights down low and sit back and listen to that record...over, and over, and over, and over........you'll get it.
Bet that.

Record Digging is a science to some. There are no guarantees. You do have bad digs but you can help yourself make smarter decisions so that you come away partially satisfied.First I think its important to know that you can get good vinyl for cheap. Raid those dollar bins. Lets say you have 50 dollars to spend. Its better to get 50 dollar records or 25 two dollar records. There are no guarantees anyway so getting more records increases your chances of finding the right samples. Study Record Covers. That's a science within itself. For instance you say you want trippy pyschedelic music. I'm assuming you mean Pyshhedellic Rock. Look for album covers that represent that era. That's mid 60's early 70's Rock. I love Orchestral too. Movie Soundtracks have tons of Orchestral Samples. You'll be suprised at the samples you'll find from Soundtracks. Movies you never expected. Rocky, Jaws, Midnight Express etc... Just look for the ones who say that the music was composed by Orchestras. As time goes on, you'll become familiar with certain Composers like John Williams, Enrico Morricone etc... Trippy can also mean Tri hop type stuff-That Dark electronic stuff like Tricky. I dont think you mean this.

Jazz has some of the best basslines. Other than that I'm not a big fan either. It can de depressing as hell, non melodic and its too much improvisation. Its like musicians freestyling, coming off the top of the head.
