I'm wondering about this when dealing with quantize...obviously the best way would be turn quantize off but if I am using like 1/16ths for my kick, hats, snare and want maximum shuffle in my groove, what are some good swing settings for the kicks/hats/snare? If anyone uses the MPC drop some swing percentages if you can.

I know the hats and snare should be looser than the kicks but shouldn't the kicks stay right on the 16ths since they set the rythym for the vocalist?

For example, click my signature and listen to the one that will play automatically...I got feedback saying that loosening the drums would make ti alot better but when I start by loosening the hi-hats, it makes them sound really offbeat and thats only when changing the swing from 50% to 55%...could this be bcause my hats are only on 1/8th notes? I would try different methods right now but I can't because I'm at work....I'm trying to get ideas to bring home with me.

f**k swing. quantize everything to 1/32 or 1/64 and fix anything that sounds off when your done.

When 1st starting off, you may want to still quantize kick and snare to 1/16 to keep them well timed, but as you get used to it, 32 and 64 are your best friends.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

turn quantize completely off then practice your drum programing is all you need to do to sound "loose".

I like it, I think you should bring in some type of horn or strings something over the top to indicate a chorus and it's good to go.

I already said "obviously the best way would be turn quantize" (above).

if you quantize your beat, and think of your hi-hats as " 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and ", with a simple beat having the bass kick on the 1 and 3, and snare on the 2 and 4, make the "ands" of the hi-hats slightly late.

If you emphasise the off-beat by making those louder, the hi-hats can really give you that head nodding feel.

As for bass kicks, lay it down with quantize off and try interatively quantizing it to 16T, until you get the sort of feel you want.

These will by no means give you exactly what you want, but are usually good places to start.

Rather than shuffling the hi-hats you should only shuffle the beats on the 1/16th notes. That's mainly gonna be the kicks but it shouldn't make the beat sound sloppy.
Someone will probably come in and say I'm wrong but try it and see what you get it has worked for me.

By "offbeat" you mean the "&'s" of the 16th's right? Make those louder and give them a little swing? I will try that when I get home. Thanks

...but normally my primary kick and my snare are on 1/8th hits and my secondary kick and hats on 16ths.

When people say you should quantize your kicks, they just don't want it to sound good! You should quantize your drums to a degree.

They always want the drums to sound "organic", but they must realize, the track itself isn't real as compared to real drums.
