OK, so I'm looking into getting a turntable. I will just use it for sampling, no mixing or scratching. Should I get the Technics SL1210 just to make sure that I'd get a quality turntable, or should I get a cheaper Gemini one here: http://www.dv247.com/invt/30884/ and buy this cartridge and stylus: http://www.dv247.com/invt/8701/. Would I be correct in saying that I would need to run the turntable through a mixer or a microphono? What is the purpose of this? I've heard people on other forums saying that it's not the turntable, it's the quality of the cartridge and stylus that counts. Therefore, am I correct in saying that just for recording and playback purposes, there would be no difference in having the Gemini or the Technics. Obviously, the Technics is better, but would it make a difference to me? Also, does the Technics SL1210 come with a sufficient cartridge and stylus, or would I have to buy one seperate?

Thanks

You need to run it through a mixer or phono to preamp it, otherwise the signal is very quiet. I say go for the cheaper one, its still direct drive so you can do a little scratching if you chose (i believe) and your not doin any real djin.

naw man, a phono pre-amp is just for turntables, so you don't need one for your mic.

To the OP, I'd get the cheap Gemini table, but I'd splurge on a Shure M447 needle & cartridge instead of the regular ones. Way less record burn, and the bass response is nice.

I wrote this song a long TIME ago...(back in '93 or '94)

Thanks everyone, that cuts my costs right down, so I'll go with the Gemini, get a phono preamp and then I'll get the M447 Cartridge and Stylus.

If you arent going to scratch you wont need to buy a 1200. you can go for one of those USB turntables thats out now.

You do need a mic preamp and a mixer, recording straight from the mic into your line in is gonna give you very little control, bad quality and with no preamp very quiet audio.

i have the gemini tt02,an it works fine for me wiv the basic stylus that came wiv it.
to be honest, i used to use my mums old ****ty deck she had since the 70s an never had any problems, other than needing a pre amp, which i got from a electrics store for £15/$25ish.
i dont see why u need anythin expensive, the sound is fine.
