if there are drums in a track, seeing the kick and snare hits should be easy...they'll be the short, but tall peaks in the track. if there are no drums you should still be able to recognize the attack portion of the note from because it'll rise quickly then sustain and/or decay
as far as down and upbeats go, your going to have to use your ear on that one. maybe the kick on 1 might be a little harder but 99% of the time, it's going to be indistinguishable from most other kicks in wav form. just listen to the song and you should be able to tell what note the bar is working to, and if there is a kick on that note (in rock and soul there will be most of the time), its your downbeat.
honestly though, your going to want to train your ear. you will frustrate yourself and get a decent amount of crappy cuts if you only go on what you see and not what you hear. i used to only goby "the big lines on the screen," but my friend who is a musician insisted i start going by what sounds right vs. what looks rights, and sometimes that means cutting the beginnings early or ends late. as my ear developed, ive found chopping to be much easier and my cuts flow better
