i was just wondering if anyone knows any tricks to finding the right note when you're trying to play over a sample. Sometimes i can find it and sometimes i cant, just wondering how it usually turns out with you all

I would spend some time learning your scales. Once you figure out some right notes, you can find out the key and therefore know the corresponding scale. Once you know the scale you can pretty much bang out different bass lines using those notes and eventually youll find one you like.
Sometimes you can just find your bass line by knowing one note, once you figure one note that goes with a note in the sample, play with keys around that note try different variations and rhythms - sometimes one line might sound like garbage but when you play the same notes in a different rhythm it sounds better.

i dunno just my 2 cents, kind of how i do it sorry if its confusing.

you gatta find the root note of ur beat like the first chord that plays on ur beat is usually ur root note and then just try **** from there but it should all lead back to that note, but u should learn ur scales tho and practise ear training and ull be able to play stuff ur hearin in ur head

but yo not to hijack but if u pitch samples by tempo dont u get pitches that are in between semitones..how do u fit a bass sample to that is it just adjusting the pitch little by little till it fits or what

If it's pitched then you would tune your instrument to the track. As well as learning scales you should learn how to play by ear. Pick out some of your favorite records and play along to them, if you're not already doing this then you don't realize how much it will help you. Learning to play by ear will develope all aspects of your playing and songwriting, no matter what your instrument of choice is.

I have a pretty good ear, so i can tune the bass to fit the sample. It's pretty easy to do on Fruity loops.
