Hey FPers

This is a question Ive been pondering, do you think sampled songs should (or do you personally) use different style drums when making a sampled beat as opposed to a composed one? I myself tend to find myself using grimy, old school style drums when sampling as I like to have that sound when sampling, gives it a real nice vintage feel and doesnt sound all crisp and clean. What do you think?

I like to mix the two.

I'm a sample-based producer so my drums are usually drums from a record, and then layered a few times with synthetic sounds.

It depends.

When I sample, I try to go for the feel as if it were being played live, so i like realistic drums and patterns, but some producers like Alchemist or Heatmakerz just go for whats knockin'. Though they use realistic drums and its jammin all the same, if you listen to alot of the rhythm of they use for their drums, kicks, and hats, its usually something a live band would never do. Just choose your own preference.

WHat i do is im usually sampling the drums off old records. And I'll use it on a club beat as long as the pitch is right for me and it knocks. If i ever use the library sounds it either layered with sampled drums or i take library kicks cus they provide a better boom.

sampled drums all the way...hi-hats no quantize for that live feel..also using two or 3 different snares for a "live feel"..changing pitch on hi-hats...but sampled drums all the way!!!they just compliment that old sound so well...and i can feel what luke locks on that layering..most old kicks dont hit(besides jazz..and rock kicks or the thinness)...but i usually eq for that!!

i actually do change the tone a little(about 1-2+)..if you listen to live hi-hats..the pitch is different on each hit..just like everytime the drummer hits the snare...I also do change the volume too like blackimpact said.its alot of work but i dont have the money to pay a drummer to play on every track i make, and im learning how to play my self actually...but the skills is not there yet to bang out a drum track.
