when i have a really old record and there's too much hiss, i capture a noise reduction profile from the initial 3-5 seconds and then subtract that from the overall wav form.. this removes the hiss (though sometimes i keep it if i want that original vinyl sound). the problem is, the records low and midrange game goes away and it's alot more treble-ey.. anyone have another method of getting that hiss out without having the treble effect?

now i'm starting to question if i'm using the right method. this trick that i'm using is actually for recording vocals with a certain level of echo.. i don't think it's meant for records.

are the standard "hiss reduction" filters the way to go?

The majority of surface noise comes from:

1) Not having perfectly cleaned records. Google "record cleaning" for more than you ever thought you needed to know about doing this properly.

2) Not having the cartridge perfectly mounted and aligned. If all you did was pop the cartridge on the tonearm I can guarantee it's not aligned properly. Again, Google is your friend.

There is no de-hiss or de-click software solution that is going to leave the fidelity of the original recording completely untouched. That said ClickRepair is the best out there (without investing thousands on a CEDAR system) and as already mentioned CoolEdit/Audition is a decent second choice.
