I know of the boom bap from Krs one album

But what is the sound?

And what is Backpacking? I use that term to discribe a certain style of music..I dont know if Im using that term correctly. Is it a lifestyle?
All I know is what I feel in my ears... And usually
Its a style that i really dont like hearing. When i see what back packers listen to its usually some J dilla stuff or some 9th wonder... Im not into that...
Although I like beats with samples I see theres a major difference in backpack

But the typical backpacker likes beats that resembles this

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WyiB-lkQBFY

While I like beats like this

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VXialSS1n00

Why do some consider the 1st set "real hip Hop" and everything else to be fake?

Boom Bap to me is the simple stripped down hip-hop.

Shuffle drums.

Hard-Hitting...DJ Premeire is the pioneer of Boom Bap IIRC.

Backpacker:

I had begun typing out a great definition, but Wikipedia's entry covers it much better.

Boom Bap:

^^^Take some of the comments on the above site with a grain of salt (though, for this particular entry, they've got the right idea).

"most often used in reference to (but not limited by) white suburbanite rap music listeners who tend to dislike mainstream rap music"

..man, wikipedia got this **** on lock!! lol.. in detail
I don't know if that's really true, or how much of it is anyhow. I just thought a backpacker was:
- person with no car
- and who always traveled with backpack knockin underground
- into hip hop creatively

No doubt!

Yeah, I was one of these niggas in my teens, but my backpack also contained: Heavy workman's gloves, Pilot ink refills (black, blue, and red), matte white Griffin (shoe polish), a broken sharpening stone, and my black book. That ****ing black book got me in deep **** once. Those were the mo'****in days yo!

I don't fall under the "new" definition though.

Boom = Kick
Bap = Snare

The bare necessities of hip-hop.

And to the OP it's just different types of hip-hop. You seem to prefer a more mainstream sound, whilst "backpacker" fans (I guess you could include me there...) prefer less popular music - not because it's less popular, and not because Common is any better than Jay-z - but because that's what pleases my ears. Everyone has their own taste.

I guess the creativity part is applicable too though, I find the mainstream can get a little repetative and I love to discover crazy things in music.

... that might not be acurate to every "backpacker" fan though... it's just me
