Learn how to edit wav files ... I assume you have adobe audition or sound forge. Find the best break beats you can and chop them up and edit to "your" liking. You'll never learn how to mix or layer properly if you don't start making "your" own kits.
If you got stock shyt that sounds good ... use those... but if you want your drums to mesh right you'll have to tweak ... break drums are perfect ... the texture is just ill and you'll learn alot about drumming just by listening to the drummers on these breaks.
Get into the habit of not relying on stock kits and libraries ... you'll be amazed at how creating your own sounds changes how you approach beats and eventually you'll develop your own signature.

yeah making your own drum kits is fun and makes it that much apprieciated when you beat is all done, i use records and sample the sounds, and then tweak em, and i also do that for other sounds, also i use a lot of 808 snares cause i like em
