hey everyone whats good? im still learning alot about sampling and my question is how to go about laying my drums over a sample that has percussion already in it? some times i can match my snares up with the the sanares in the sample but all in all it makes for a track that dont have a good hiphop vibe. i know i can chop up the sample and s*** but sometimes i just wanna cut pieces out and loop them up. ive tried EQing the sample but it just dont have the sound i want after i do it. i guess after making original composed beats in 4/4 timing im not used to other timing especially since alot of older tracks have a live drummer. but if some one could give me some advive it would make my day. tahnks.

guess il just f*** with it my self till iget it to sound right seing how people would rather ramble about stupid ass s*** on here than give advice to people who ask questions that wanna better them selves and learn more. yeah yeah i know that its a matter of trial and error sometimes.

there's lots of other threads in here that deal with it. you could try looking for those or using the search function, or you could just try to work shit out yourself which is what a lot of people have had to do before you. there's no need to get shitty about things because people didn't reply to your thread immediately.

My advice would make sure the chop is perfect(make sure it loops perfectly and sounds good just by itself). Espically if you're looping a drum break. Now, if you layer your own drums over the loop and it still dont sound hip hop'ish, then chances are the loop wasn't that hip hop'ish to begin with. Also, you just gotta make sure the drums you layer are in good time with the present loop. Otherwise it will throw off the whole vibe and make it soun like crap. I hope this helps.

Oh, and if you can, make sure the drums that you're using are quality, and somewhat in tune with the loop/drumbreak.

you have to make sure ur chopped sample is in the same time ur recording over it, generally its 4/4. So make sure ur sample is in full bars and has 4 beats to each bar. Then u want to pitch your sample up or down to make it fit the speed of your beat. Thats how kanye gets that chipmunk sound, cause he uses old slow jams that are around like 60bpm then puts the pitch up so it fits to his beat's 85bpm.
