Anyone out there actually play thier own drum tracks, whether with a keyboard or synth drum kit? Thats the way I do it, but am finding it impossible, no matter how much rhythm I have or could acquire in the future to recreate some of the beats, especially in drum and bass. I am working with just a midi keyboard hooked up to a shareware sequencer. Anyone out there actually doing it without a groove box, drum machine, or sampler?

Yeah I can add notes on my Piano roll, and i do do that. I use midi orchestrator plus by voyetra. I like it because its simple and lets me focus on the music which is more important to me now than studio tricks (but I think its time to move on, suggestions anyone, i was thinking logic audio). But I have tried and tried and there are some beats I just cant get. I am not the most talented percusionist, but can hold my own. Just wanted to see if anyone is having success producing solid drum tracks without the help of some sort of pattern writer

Well,

I was thinking about getter a V-drum kit,
but then I checked out the HandSonic from
Roland. Wow. This is a really excellent
device.

The Handsonic is made to be played with
your hands. Its one pad, that has 15 sections,
and has a really light touch. Just your
finger tips and trigger the excellent
sounds that Roland has installed.

Its however a bit of cash at about $1000
smackers.....eeeeeekkkkkk. It is a v-drum
pad, and that's why its so much cash. If
nothing else its worth a trip to the
music store to check it out. I made this
trip a couple of weeks ago, and stayed for
about 3 hours playing with that darn pad.

If this is not in the cards, you can just
use the Grid based drum sequencing that is
common in most packages. Or, my new
fav program is "Reason". Wow. this is
a great, wonderful, excellent program. You
can program the drums in a number of ways,
old style TR808/909 or using the sequencer
at the bottom of the interface....either way
works in minutes. Or, a cheaper method
is FruityLoops another excellent shareware
package.

If you don't like these methods, and want
to play the drums live, try recording at a
slower rate. Maybe half speed or less, once
you have something you like.....blast the
BPM up to the drum and bass speed of what
150 to 160 range. This works toooo.

Try BeatCreator or Beat Quantizer.
1. Cut out a drum loop(as many bars as you need)
2. Import to BC
3. Set the grid to isloate the drum hits. You may need to do this manually.
4. Export to midi file.
5. import to fav sequencer.
6. edit the sequence so the hits match the instrument and adjust velocities ect.

Create midi files for each instrument as well. Then you can stack grooves, change instrument sequence and sounds/samples easily.
Here is the link to BC.
