Alright I have been using Acid for about 3 months and have been able to come up with some pretty wild stuff. I was thinking about buying a sampler, and then thought to myself "well all Acid is is a big sampler". Sure it may be a little bit more difficult, well much more difficult to create rhythmic patterns, it can be done. Acid cant really be brought live, so that sucks. I dont have any experience with a "real" sampler, and wanted to start a discussion on this to get peoples vibe on the software side of the house vs. Hardware. Anyone going totally virtual wit thier studio?

well 1 minute... for me ACID has nothing to do with samplers.. I mean it is a WAVE SEQUENCER... and a sampler is MORE than that

you can find AKAI CDROMs with INSTRUMENTS such as strings, piano, and stuff... those are NOT LOOPS but whole instruments where you can play chords, melodies etc.. THIS is what sampler can do, and what people generally dont realize.. they think you can use a sampler only to loop stuff... no... you can turn it into a realistic sounding MIDI module...

anyway...

software vs hardware sampler now...

I can speak, because i've been using REALITY for 2 years, then GIGASAMPLER for a year or so, and then... AKAI S6000 256MB RAM for a year or so.

I sold th eAKAI a few months ago because i was moving to another country (the beast is huge and costs alot to move).

Anyway... The software is NOT STABLE at all.. you never know when your computer is going to crash... the hardware ALWAYS work fine. Also the software does NOT have the polyphony they claim, the hardware does (ie 128 notes played at the same time on my AKAI was perfectly stable). Also (yes...) the hardware has NO LATENCY time, the software takes a lot of milliseconds to trigger the sound.

Plus other things...

basically, if software samplers were that good, AKAI, EMU and other YAMAHA would not sell any sampler.. but they DO! More than ever.

Anyway tht's just my 2cents from my own experience.. I did love giga, i did love reality, etc... UNTIL i got a real sampler. Then I understood how good hardware was.

but wait... if you would use a sampler only to playback a loop... well you can use software.. coz you only need 1 voice of polyphony to do that, and you dont use much resources... will work fine.

hope this helps

If you have a good computer then you don;t have to worry about latency, and CPU and then if ya got the goods the computer won;t be crashing often.

You just need a good comp, and everything is realyl stable. And Reason, which is what I use for sampling is sweet. You get tons of options for polyphonic action. And my 196 meg memory is fine when i playa ton of notes, but the thing is, do you really ever need to play 128 notes: )?
just 10 is fine, ya got 10 fingers, I dunno, Ive never needed more than that really, n if I do, I'll just bump up the number and since my comp is quality, It's all good.

wait wait.... you sure have 10 fingers, but a sequencer has SEVERAL TRACKS man... you can have a track for the piano, a track for the strings (even 2), a track for the drums, a track for the bass... etc..

I UNDERSTAND your point Kubina, .. BUT... but believe me the performances are much better on a real sampler.

I remember getting really pissed hearing the GLITCHES on the mighty GIGAPIANO, because I pressed the keys too fast. And I had loads of RAM believe me.

The software is getting there, for sure.. and it may b e fine with what "goingtocali" needs a sampler for, but I think its important that someone comes in and warn a bit about the pros and th econs of software vs hardware

Well looks like I am a little bit naive about the use of a sampler.

I've learned a lot from this post. Excellent. I was very naive about samplers too... now i know a little more about what a TRUE sampler is and does. I want one.
