newbie question on sampling-
if i take a record and chop up samples from it (not single hit short samples but more like a couple beats each or whatever..), how do I know what key to play in if I switch the pitch of it? Ive never used a sampler b4 but i would imagine u can change the key up and down by semitones (or whatever they are called) so you are 1 or 2 or 3 semitones above or below the orginal sample. The only way you would know what key you changed to is if you knew the key that the original sample is in. is this right?
after a person changes the pitch of a sample, do they care what key they are in or do they jsut play their other instrumentation from ear?
is any of this making sense?!

u dont really need to look into it that deeply. U just set the sample and work new elements around it. then when u can see what notes and chords fit to its new pitch.... u can kigure out what key ur in.

But once u start shifting the pitch of samples, they dont neccessarily progess in exact semitones. So u often find that once uve pitched a sample, when it comes to say building a bassline, the sample can sometimes be so flat or sharp that it needs extra pitch tweaking or u'll never get anything to fit. So because of that, knowing the root key of the sample often isnt very useful at all.

Its all just getting stuck in and figuring stuck out in ur own way as u go

I think it's a combo of both knowing and playing by ear. I play the guitar a little so sometimes it's easy for me to figure out the key of a sample other times it's not so easy...I think picthing up or down by 5 will keep you in the two major notes of the original major scale...I think.

Great points jjaammeess
