Total newbie question...
I want to take a sample hit and make an instrument out of it by mapping the note up the scale logically through the pitches. The sampler that I am looking at supports all RIFF wav. files at any rate. So the newbie question is- are there a lot of the "typical" (whatever that means) sounds out there (drums and bass at least) that i can use for hip hop in wav. form? I know this might seem like a rediculous question, but the sampler i am looking at dosen't support a ton of extra formats so i dont want to feel pigeonholed working with drum sounds and bass sounds... (other instruments would be cool too obviously..)
thoughts?

Which sampler are you using?

because RIFF Wavs are simply MP3-encoded audio files that is stored using WAV file format's headers.

You need to call your cousin then, and not ask anonymous people on a message board. But welcome to FP anyway homie.

I wrote this song a long TIME ago...(back in '93 or '94)

It is inherently worse. As somebody mentioned, a .riff is an mp3 packaged in the .wav container format.

Mp3 is a lossy compression scheme.

On shortcircuit website, it says it is compatible with "RIFF wave-files (.wav) (8/16/24/32-bit & 32-bit float, mono/stereo at any sample rate)". I dont know much about audio formats, but this mean that it is not compatible with "normal" wav. sounds? Like if i took a turntable and played the sample through my interface onto a track in pro tools, that would be considered a normal wav. file right? and then i coudnt use this in the sampler??

Ooops. I was mistaken.

A .WAV file is a type of RIFF (resource interchange file format).

RIFF has nothing to to with mp3 compression. Sorry for that mixup.

Next time I'll do my research before spewing BS.

Almost every and all samplers will support standard uncompressed .WAV samples, so that should not be a problem.
