I personally attack it with eq usually taking it out most of the bottom end, lower the bit rate use a vst made by izotope but not to much because it adds a lot of his before you know it. What do you do. This is a simple question but it is their are a lot of techniques that can be used. Jr rotem just takes out the bottom end of his instrumetns for instance.

you can record on tape.

take out the tape crackle the tape and spin it back in,record the beat or sample, and resample it again or tranfer to computer using a mixer ...etc....

or use cooledit, cubase or whatever and convert to a lower sample rate .

Or you could just sample some vinyl static and pops and put that over the beat

if you take advantage of eq u can make pianos and stuff sound sampled. another idea is if you're playing something on the piano play it with some extra notes and then separate the chops for the original thing and play it back like it was sampled. i have yet to try it out but it probably will come out cool.

i didn't mention it cause he said he had izotope. i don't think he the EQing plugin. i think he ment the IZOtope Vinyl plugin. i makes it sound old and distorted but. the crackling of a dusty vinyl is looped so short. you can tell it's fake.

I use vinyl vsts in subtle amounts.

The best idea (which YogzDaBeatChild already said) would be taking it trough analog tape. If you don't have big tape recorder (magnetophon), you can use normal casette deck. C-casette has kick-ass compression by the way.. let it clip a bit and aaaaaahhhh!

But those tape recorders aren't so hard to get. I got mine from a fleamarket. Double-check that it works, though. Looks like this:
