does a song have to be at least a certain amount of years old for YOU to sample it?

i've heard people say this for themselves but personally i dont care if its from 1974 or 2004 as long as it has no connection to/influence from hip hop, if you get me, i'll sample it...

I think the older music that was played live is the best to sample. The drums aren't very loud and they have epic ass intros and break downs ... soul and classic rock I'm speaking of.

But trying to sample shyt that is recent presents a problem for me personally because percussion tends to be loud as hell ... I can't filter the drums out entirely to manage a good chop sequence ... IMO, newer songs are better to sample and call re-mix ... but trying to get a brand new track out of a newer song verses flippin' a 70s soul joint ...I'mma choose that 70s soul all the time.

same as fam, i tend to sample older only because it's usually easier. but somtimes newer songs getting sampled sound really good like talib kweli's ms. hill sampled from ben kweller - in other words.

its about the sound, (production values) that you are trying to get.
each era and genre has different sounds. use them all for different purposes, but realize if you sample some 80's drums that's what it's gonna bring to mind.
i say sample whatever you want. the 60's 70's soul thing as been done quite a bit (not that it will ever get old), so lets try something new.

even dj shadow (who had lots of rules) on "entroducing" sampled from a bjork track that had come out only a few yars earlier.
