Hi!
I'd like to ask, what do you think, which is the best program, to use for making good quality trance music with computer!
I have a lot synths, but i don't have enought money, for a studio recording!
So, I thought i'll make music with computer! So, what do you think, what should i use?

well... it is easier than you think, don't be scared.

First, get yourself "Cubase VST 5" or "Logic" or "Cakewalk"
Any of those will do the trick. they do NOT produce any sound, choose one, and start composing.

They are sequencers. A sequencer is like your music sheet.. you write the notes on the screen, assign a track to a MIDI device (one of your synthesizers for example), and control it remotely.

As for recording... Easy again (at least to capture what you do, quickly): Get a simple DAT recorder, and connect it to the output of your computer or of your mixer.

Godo luck. Feel free to ask any question.
And by the way... Welcome to the community!

wait a minute... I said that Cubase is NOT making any sound.. you CONTROL synthesizers... you dont even need a soundcard to use it!

You said you have tons of synthesizers.. which models do you have?

It's ok no problem... this community is full of people who will help you.

It is a bit complicated to explain every little steps... But I will try to guide you a little bit. You should get a quick book about Cubase and how to compose with it.

Get yourself ONE synth box (Supernova or Nova, or Virus..), and hook the MIDI OUT of the PC to the MIDI IN of the synthesizer.

Then, get a cheap MIDI CONTROLLER keyboard, hook it's MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN of the PC.

Then open Cubase VST 5, and click on a track. You will see columns on the left (Track, Chn, Instrument, Out...) right?

ok now, forget the tracks with the word "Master" in the Out column.. these are Audio...

click on a track, and select Channel 1 in "chn" and select an output device in the column OUT (it can say "SB Live OUT" or something similar.. depends on your MIDI interface).

You have to tweak around yourself... but you should start to understand... And isn't there anyone in your shop who can help?

Okay... if you press the controller keys you should hear the synth... if not, you have ot edit some MIDI options in cubase... but it would be long to describe everything.

Ah you also need to connect the AUDIO OUT of your synth to the AUDIO IN of your PC (and enable LINE IN in your sound options) in order to hear the synthesizer in your PC speakers.

Hope this helped you a bit. Sure there is a LOT to explain (could take a 500 pages book in fact!) but you'll probably learn a bit here to start your passion.

Okay, so i'm not that beginner!

In the shop, i'm the one, who knows the most of this prog, so....

I made heeps of music in the last 2 years i use cubase!
Once or twice i hooked midi to it, but i couldn't use the synths' voices in cubase!
And that is what i want to do!
I know it's possible!

I see you 2 have Sb Live!
I think you noticed, that the soundfonts of this card is really expendable! The thing i need to do, is to get midi voices into soundfonts, and than i'm ready!
I can make waves midi!
I'v allready made a midi synth full of effects and stuff like that from wave, what cubase uses like "midi instrument".

So my prob is more like, "how to get the voice of the synth into soundfont" )

That's nearly all)

ohhh ok ok

i didnt get that.

I just gave an example.. i am not using the MIDI on the SB... I have a MIDIMAN 2X2 ISA interface (now they make those nice USB ones) from 3 years ago.

mmhhh... I still dont understand what you want to do "use the synth's voices in cubase"... Do you mean recording the audio of the synthesizer and put the WAVes in your sound card's memory? if so, why would you do that?

A friend of mine is doing some of the best Trance on MP3.com (guardians of the earth). He is using a NOVATIONS UPERNOVA synthesizer, plugged to Logic I think (equivalent of cubase) and Gigasampler (or another sampler) for the drums... And voila! If you have the synth, you dont need to try to create sound fonts of the synth's sound to hear sounds... just trigger the synth via MIDI and boom it works.

What do you think?
