Well, I don't have a vocoder yet, but I've taken out a loan which I'm sharing with a freind of mine who's in dire financial situations, so I'm spending the remaining £2,000 on some gear...

A Yamaha A4000
Electrix Warp Factory Vocoder
Some FX unit...forgot which one I liked in the shop...was it the 'Studio 500'?
Another FX unit with a realtime parameter knob to change pitch....
And the new Alesis AirFX.

Then I'll be set up to make any music I like, and with the right gear to perform live on stage...
I'll be playing back most of my tracks from my EMU XL-1 thru MIDI from my computer, and as for the LIVE involvment I'll be playing custom sounds from my Korg 01/W through the AirFX, and splitting off the ouput of that into the vocoder which I will be gabbering into with a cordless headset mic.
I'm not after creating robot sounds...I'll avoid that as much as poss but try and use my voice, with pitch shifting and vocoding....it'll be strange.

With the gear I'm about to buy, it should eb so flexible that I'm really exactly sure how I'll connect it all up!

I suppose you're looking for a software vocoder though - that's not my scene because as a musician aiming for LIVE performance I need to have all the controls at my fingertips, that means having real knobs that I can tweak at an instant rather than having to go back to the computer and getting the mouse cursor on the virtual controls...

Yeah, you're right, I'm looking for a software vocoder because at the moment I am not concerned with making live music. I'm already happy if I can produce something.

ORANGE vocoder is pretty good.
I dont know if there is a trial version.. I think it is a VST software synth that can be used independently from Cubase as well.

Check on http://www.steinberg.com I think they are making it

Ok,

I have a vocoder in my Roland SP808. Works
great. Its only a 10 band, but still works
fine.

Also, the PulsarII card ships with a vocoder
as part of the standard package....that one
is more than 10 bands I think, but I would
have to look.

Again....Not free, but they work great!

Also,

I just tried out the AirFx device
from Alesis. Kind of cool, and it
does have a Vocoder "LIKE" effect. I
don't think its a true vocoder, but
it sounds goods.

The device also has 50 or so other filters
that you can use LIVE during remix. I
really don't do live remix, but it was
really fun to play with at the store.

Its only $199. Not a bad
price for a bunch of live FX!

And, again its a fun toy.

I was surprised by the vocorder in my Microkorg. For a unit i bought for under 500, it can crank out some wicked voice effects. You can also pass samples through it as the first osci, which lets you build the whole synth architecture on top of it. Works great live and in studio, and aside from the keyboard the synthesis is definetly value. If it sounds interesting to you, I'd get this (never been happier w/ 400$ ).
