I was just wondering, if I were to sample lines from a movie like say napoleon dynamite (or any movie) it would be illegal right? But what if I bought something like the napoleon dynamite breaks album (or anything with movie samples), could I then use the samples royalty free?

.. i was wondering the same thing a while ago, I also got those breaks and also the cartoon ones and all that.. but I'm thinking it is Ok, as long as its a breaks record and not the original soundtrack. Because what else would it be used for? That's why they compiled it, for the people to sample and use.

you would have to do research and find out if the films you're using are in the public domain or not. If someone still holds copyrights on them, you'll need to pay and get permission to use them.

Also sampling from movies does not give you royalty free samples. Copyright restrictions still apply.

Finding public domain films isn't too hard on google, and you can do whatever you want with these.
