what are the best cities or states for an alternative rock band in the U.S?
with the best audience, where it can be easy to play gigs, wide choice of labels, managers, agents, publishing companies...?
west coast ? east coast? big towns or small one?

Anywhere, but LA, NYC, Chicago, Dallas, and Tallahassee are the more obvious. That's just where the most people are. Many great bands start in Nowheresville too. Hard work is the key. Not just moving to the best city and hoping a record deal lands in your lap.

St. Paul / Minneapolis, MN

I'm not kidding. They have a lot of great bands and a great history. That's where Prince is from, Morris Day and the Time....and a good selection of hard rock bands, hip-hop, and DJs.

Aren't that many labels, but the crowds and scene are great.

This isn't who it would be if it wasn't who it is.-If you know who said this, I gotta give you props.

I'd agree with you about Minneapolis/ St. Paul... except I'm from there... and I know better... you're right... lot of really amazing musicians coming from Twin Cities... and a pretty good scene... man just listing the names: Prince, Morris Day, Replacements, etc... (Dylan too!) so you know it's a good town... for individual musicians making it big... but for a scene... I don't know... Minnesota in general has this kind of defeatist attitude about itself... most musicians there, they think the town's too small, and they'd rather be somewhere else, somewhere bigger... I don't think that anybody really invests their time and energy into the scene, whatever scene it would be... that's why there are few record labels. Maybe I was myopic when I was there, or just in the wrong genre or something, but that's just what I felt when I lived there...

Portland... now there's a town for music!!! I hope.

Actually, Mpls. has alot of really nice venues... First Ave. Dakota for jazz... alot of places... maybe I'm wrong and stupid... maybe I want to go back... who knows?

I've heard from a guy who used to live there that the Portand scene really sucks. Pretty much the whole Northwest.

But I don't know 1** hand.
