Has anyone used the Zoom PS-02 Palmtop Studio? I've been looking for reviews, and all I can find are articles which only say what it does, not how well it does it. It looks like something I want to get for recording my ideas, kinda like a musical notebook thing. I'd apprediate any feedback, thanks.

Me either, although I may just break down and buy one to check it out. I've recently re-discovered my old Zoom 9002Pro Artist edition (the pre-cursor to the PS-02) and love using it for direct recording into Acid Pro and Cakewalk. I figured the effects could only get better and it would be fun to have additional features built in (including the chromatic tuner). If I pick it up I will post a mini review. My only gripe with the original Zoom 9002 Pro was that the volume knob affects the output as well as the headphone output. In my opinion this resulted in a "trebbly" sound when put through a guitar amp (sounds fine on direct line recordings). Not sure why they did this as there is also a master level controll built in which could serve as the signal level for the output jack. Will keep you posted...

Well, the PS02 came yesterday !
It's really cool. Except.. you really do need to get an extra smart media card with it, because the one that comes with it has NO memory left whatsoever. If I delete all the Demo songs however, it's supposed to have 3 minutes of recording time on it. Which isn't too good. But besides that,it's really cool. I wouldn't use it to create finished products. But as a "musical notebook": for recording and shaping ideas- it's a wonderful tool. I'd suggest it only if you need something portable. If not, then stick with your PC or what ever you're using now for this type of thing.
The drums are realistic sounding... except for the ride. What I don't like is that you can't create your own rhythms (which is mainly why I wouldn't use it to create a finishd product) But there are a lot of rhythms to chose from and variations on those too. So, as I said, it would be helpful in planning out a song. The bass track just adds the root of the chords (which you program in).
it's got a lot of effects, but most are types of reverb and/or distortion. But the ones they have are pretty sweet. Nice vocal effects and accoustic guitar effects as well. The built in mic is really good, but you can only use it with the vocal and accoustic guitar effects.

well, I think that's all I have to say about it for now.
If you have the money (350 USD) and really think you need it, then I'd say definitely get it.

well, that's all I have to say for now.

Thanks for the mini-review! :)

Do you feel that the 32 KHz "hi-fi" audio quality is a mark against the ps02?

Also, if you have tried to import the SmartCard data to your computer, do you know how long that process takes?

Thanks!

Ben

actually...
I just sold it.
I didn't use it much, because it wasn't really what I was looking for. As I said, it's good for a "musical notebook"
but you still have to know exactly what you want in your song. You can't have just bits of ideas. I didn't try to use the smart card w/ my computer b/c I don't have anything to do it with- you need a "smart media" interface kinda thing.
The recording I did had good quality on it. The 32kHz isn't really bad... it's good enough, I think, for anything you'd need to use it for. But after I deleted the demos, I still only had like 2 minutes. But the original card is only 32MB. You would definitely need a bigger card if you want to do anything serious with it.
I was going to get a 64 or 128 MB smart media card, but they're REALLY expensive!! like $60 for the 64MB and 100 something for the 128!I didn't think it was worth it to spend all that extra $$ on it.

Cool, I just bought one

We'll see. I bought the PC interface too, so I should know very soon how this thing stacks up against a MiniDisc recorder.

Have been using a PS 02 for some time now - as a partner in a recording studio with some VERY nice equipment I was very surprised how well the 02 stands up - when you consider the records and CDs (not to mention compact tapes!) we recorded on tape based - either compact or open reel - the answer must be this is one nice piece of dogs ......... we actually produced a CD demo on our main machine and the same demo on the PS 02 - we could tell the difference (just!) but out of the people who listened to them both - about half actually prefered the zoom version!!!!!

Yes the smartmedia it comes with is only for demo and for "boot-up" so buy a 64 or 128 card (about 50 and 95 uk pounds)

I already had the interface as our digital cameras use the same media - so its nice to be able to store back-ups on the PC and convert to waves - the program is free from Zoom and so are the updates for bass patterns/kits etc....

The unit is very easy to use and the manual is Ok - price seems to vary a lot here in the UK - high street price was £300 + but now lies at about £299 - I paid £210 but maybe by looking around you might get it cheaper. You'd pay that for the effects unit!!!

One thing - we specialise in "Traditional" music and the sound from the Zoom (as most digital recorders) is a bit too clean and clinical - so stick an anologue stage in somewhere (we master to anologue then run in digital) to warm it up.

Great fun - cheap and results that are far in advanced of a tape based multitrack - got to worth it!!

Im a right in saying that -
if I press the record button on the zoom ps02 it will record on to track 2 while playing track 1 also?

so in effect - the rapper/singer can hear the beat in his/her ears and lay down some vocals while its recorded on track 2.

Its probably a simple answer but 'zoom' dont make it clear that we can do this.
