Hey Y'all,
I was just wondering how some of you compose your songs with samples.
I'll start off, with some things I like to try, but I wanted to get some feedback.
If I have a loop, I'll trigger it quickly over and over before it repeats for the intro. Kind of a roll effect.
Then either I'll let the loop, Loop, and have the drums over top, or else if it feels too busy, I'll just trigger certain parts to go along with the beat.
Add your techniques!

If I find something I lke I chop it up and then sample into my hardware. Then I go through my pads and press them til I like a sequence. I then find some percussion and try to vibe with it. Im still learning though. I think I might try building drum patterns up and then hittting samples to it...its all about experimentation.

I make my drum loop first, then chop up my sample and make a 4-bar loop. then i chop some more from the same record of sometimes a different record and make another 4 bar loop...and again for the chorus. Then I sometimes add synths, scratches (just starting doing this) and other sampled sounds i have saved already.
I pretty much know what im going to do with the sample as soon as i hear it. Sometimes i need to change the pitch or reverse it to hear something im feeling though.

what software/hardware you use?
I find it hard to line up to many different loops, cause they're not in the same notes, etc...
But I'm using mainly reason w/trigger finger, and just getting into Live4

I use a Yamaha SU700 sampler and Adobe Audition. The SU700 is a phrase sampler with tricky sequencer. It can be quite limiting on occasions but I love it! I've had it for about a year and it's only now that I can get something decent with it. I prob need to upgrade...

I checked out your mp3's, well the first one. Very nice! I couldn't listen to it anymore though with the robot copyright overtop.
Change that up! I wanted to listen to the whole thing, but that voice was just killin me.
What about accapellas over top? I'm curious about that for myself too?

LOL! You talking about the tag? Its to stop people on Soundclick from straight jacking my stuff! Damn, its had the opposite effect, people just dont want to listen at all. Yeah, thats a better idea, i probably start putting 'capellas over them. Thanks for checking me out though.
You got any stuff to put up so we can peep your technique? Im always up to learn something new.

yeah, I don't have anything up at the moment. Tons of songs started, just none finished yet. I should get my but into 2nd gear and do that though.
And from what I found, Ableton is the way to go to match accapellas to the beat.
You sell any beats online?

Ableton you say? I'll check for a demo...
Yeah, I used to do that, start a track and then not complete it 'cos I had other ideas and stuff. I learnt to complete a track and then move on 'cos I wasnt getting anywhere!
I haven't sold anything, I dont think I will...well not yet at least. I have to step up a couple of levels. I am working with one rapper who contacted me over the net and another fella who asked for two of my beats. This dude has got potential IMO, so hopefully I'll get something out of it.
You should get to cracking man! Put some stuff up! You never know what will become of it!

ya no doubt.
I can't believe no one else had any comments here for this topic!
It's something no one really discusses (from what I've found), and yet, once you get sampling, it's the next most important thing.
I used to do alot of work w/stock sounds, etc... But then the more I got into rap production, the more I realized sampling is definately the way to go.
