Depends on how you want them to sound... EQ isn't always necessary...
For a kick, you could cut... well.. roll off everything above 1500 or so and boost at 150 and 80 if you want a nice thump...
Hats, you could boost them at 2k+...
Experimentation is the key...
How one uses the EQ is a key piece to their own sound...

You would usually use EQ to mix, not as an effect. You use it to make a sound fit better in the mix, or leave room for something else that overlaps the same frequency range.
Notice I said "usually", because there are really no rules.

try filtering to take drums outta samples
*edit*
although the drums won't be completely gone, you will only hear a small percentage of them, depending on how u filter the sample
