i was just thinking about all the sh1t-talking that some of the producers around here do about other upcoming producers simply looping something from an old song and putting drums on it and calling it a record, and having the nerve to call those people "wannabes" or "not real producers". some of the most celebrated producers have made a career out of doing just that, and in some cases even using a drum break from one record and a horn/string sample from another (premier, just blaze, etc. etc.). what gives?

the confusion is beatmakers callin themselves producers... a beatmaker would be someone who just well obviously made the beat and sold it or sent it off to whoever bought it.. the producer is the one who after makin the beat (sumtimes their not even the ones who technically made the beat) is in the studio with the artists recordin vocals and actually hellpin out with the whole song formation and what not...

After 2 long years...I'm Back!..now lets make some music!

I'd say about 85% of today's popular Hip-Hop is sampled.

Out of that 85% I'd say that 90% of them are 'straight loops'

Beleive me...no one complains EXCEPT for other producers.

So what that means is that WE as the producers i.e.(meaning WE ARE KEEPING OUR HOUSE IN ORDER) as far as these beats go. NOW when it comes to production yeah there are producers but a small amount of them do it like "P.DIDDY" were at the same time they are the RECORD EXEC and look forward to seeing "the product" which is the group " turn heads and generate sales and gain profit from those sales' .........- MOS DEF SAID IT BEST "YOU WANNA KNOW HOW TO MAKE BEATS AND HOW TO RHYME YOU BETTER KNOW HOW TO ADD....IT'S MATHEMATICS

I respect the fact that great producers have used just loops. But now things have moved on, we're able to do a lot more **** with samples and more doors are open for experimenting than ever before. Im not saying using a loop shouldnt be done, but theres a difference between using a tom jones loop and adding some dirty drums and bass and making the **** bang (ala alchemist) and looping a dramatics sample, speeding it up and adding a ****load of crashes (ala heatmakerz) u can tell they have no passion for the music...they practically say they just want the money on smack dvd. Theyre just following trends. Theyre beatmakers. Alchemist on the other hand can not only make a heavy beat, but can also make a heavy SONG. To me, he is a producer...I dont think recording vocals is a necessity in order to be called a producer.

Some of the difference is genre based though. You ask anyone in hip-hop what a producer is, they'll tell you he makes beats. I do everything really that can be done in music, and I don't really think it's something to ***** about. Who cares really? My own opinion though on loops is it's alright to use them, just have enough pride and creativity to make it your own. Meaning, if you use a loop, alter it as much as you can and turn it into something original. Filter, chop, pitch, stretch, add effects, use your imagination...
