Warning: This isn't another synth vs sample BEEF thread, I don't even think I need to say this... cuz it's tedious. But just to let you know, besides this thread is for samplers ONLY, beetches!

Anyway, I was thinkin the other day, not that I'm an expert by any means. But I was tryin to make my first complete synth beat the other day, and I mean it was nothing to write home about. I think a few parts were decent, maybe I'm being modest. But as samplers, do you even really care to make synth beats??

I mean, I don't wanna limit myself but for me theres never been anything that matches a dope sampled track. I think flipping a sample can have just as much of a degree of difficulty as anything else so I'm not speakin on those terms. I'd kinda like to have keyboard work in my bag of tricks, but sometimes after I hear a track by 9th or Kanye... I'm like WHY? The shlt is crazy. Sometimes I think, maybe it's just our niche, our lane. You don't hear the Neptunes tryin to flip samples over and over, and you don't hear 9th behind a Motif, ya feel me?

I know alot of the faithful insecure "original composers" of FP have tons of defense mechanisms to try to make them seem bigger. I noticed one of them was, "what are you gonna do when you run out of things to sample?". I honestly don't think we'll ever run out of records to sample. Atleast not in my lifetime. And these days so many cats are sampling newer songs and makin it hot, this shlt ain't never gonna stop.

I got some of the rarest 9th joints, and every one of them are heat... I can't believe it. His crates never run dry. At this point, as far as I wanna take my synth work is too get good enuff where I can layer a sample I consider to be bland or empty like Kanye does with some tracks (IE the Dead or Alive sample). Maybe my outlook on this will change if I ever become more handy behind a keyboard, but as of now this is just how I feel.

Not to discredit those who do make ill synth beats. They know who they are and I show'em love. It just seems everybody has there lil niche, very few people master both fields well... maybe only Just Blaze. Pete Rock, Yay, 9th, Premo... all dig. And you got the Neptunes, Lil Jon who stay in their lane too with very few crossovers. Anyway, I was just wondering everybody elses thoughts and experiences on this issue?? Discuss.

I see your fear. I see your greed. Only when I plunge... will you see me. Prick.

I don't limit myself. I do both. I guess thats why Just Blaze is my favorite producer. But i definately like sampled tracks better. I'm started to play on top of my samples as well. I know this isn't a sampling vs. composing thread.... but I gotta sh1t on people who hate sampling real quick.

Dear Mr./Mrs. I Only Compose: Unless you have a band of real instruments in your bedroom your sampling. Workstations, vsts, soundfonts, etc. All of that sh1t is sampling. It's just a matter of copyrighted samples vs. royalty free samples. I can take a piano loop of a nina simone record and chop every single note... then "compose" it how I want. People are always quick to say "I made this track from scratch, no samples. All I used was FL and sampletank." You're sampling dawg.

well, to be honest i think that it's always the result that counts in the end, no matter how you have achieved the result

why should i limit myself on only synth/romplerbeats or only sampled beats, when i can make them fit togehter well? use the best of both worlds

i, for instance, started out making my own melodies, but eventually started chopping up samples and loops as well..

and if i have a good loop, of course i'll add my own melodies or background sounds to make it "fit my taste"

i guess that's just a point that us producers really care about, because the average listener, doesn't care if a track was sampled, if a certain drumkit has been 'overused' or anything similar.. they don't really care about such issues: they simply want to listen to hot music

i did my first sampled beat a month ago up until then i had done all my beats with nothing but the synths and vst's in FL 5 i like both methods but i find i tend to lean more towards sampled beats now but i will throw a synth bass on a sample or vise versa like dude said its the end result that really counts...NO LIMITS

I love the way they look at me.....

I make both sampled and synth beats, I just find that I have a higher productivity rate with my sampled beats.

I try to do both. I haven't been sampling for very long, but it feels so good to find that crazy-tight sample on some obscure record that nobody but a producer would ever care to even look at. Right now I'm working on this record of a lady playing the harp. Its gonna be nuts when I'm finished with the track.

But then again, I love the feeling of putting together a dope chord progression too. Personally, I'm not even about the 'synth' sound right now. Until I get a real synth, and not just this FL half-assed tone generator, I'll stick to the piano and strings, thank you very much.

The next step that I take is going to be to record myself laying down some simple guitar licks, and then flip those. F*ck clearing a sample, I'm bout to be making my own.

And to anyone, samplers or 'composers' that hate on the other's method:

Y'all got too much time on your hands to be worrying about what somebody else is doing. If you aren't busy 24/7 with your music and the other crap thats going on in your life, then you can't call yourself a producer.

Peace!

I haven't even come close to getting good at sampling but i try making synth beats to inrease my repertoire. Even saying that, they're still crap!! It's all about experience though. I just dont want to be pidgeoned-hole, so i wanna show other sides of my 'creativity'.

Drop by, leave a comment and add me.
