yea, the obscure samples are better in every way. most poeple wont know what sample it is, so they wont steal the idea. and its way easier to clear. i think a post in the industry and legal forum said, if u sample someone who has been dead for 50+ years and their heirs havent recopyrighted the music then you get a free sample. so yea the lesser known samples are the best.

for creating new songs i definitely try to use unknown or less known artists, but for practising purposes some well known samples can be used as well..

i.e. to try to replicate someone elses song, just to get the feel how the other producer made this track

if you don't have a certain routine yet, so if you're just starting out, this can help you quite a bit

frankly it just depends whether you are looking for phrases, sounds, or other elements.

although its easy to see the value of rare records for sampling grooves, you should certainly realize that on more famous albums, etc, the bigger the budget, the better the engineers often would have been. these are good for single notes, drum sounds, etc. Unless you go crazy and sample something ABSOLUTELY RECOGNIZIBLE (ie the stomp/clap loop in queen's we will rock you) its unlikely that you'll have a prob if you're using these for source material.

a phrase is generally any piece of music that is sampled not only for sound but for harmonic and rhythmic content. it'd be bigger than one shot/tone.
