Is it better to hand out demos at party's on Tape or CD?

mhhh.. good questions... well, you know what? I don't have a tape player, and I see more and more people without one as well.. On the other hand, most people are using a computer with a CDROM drive, and all hifis do have CD... I think CD is the right one.

But hey that's my point of view.

We gave out tapes at last party, but it cost us more to do tapes then it would to do CD's. I think we are going to move to CD's for the next party. Next Question - Is a Sound Blaster Live a significant enough card to record a demo on?

well it depends.. how are you recording? are you recording 1 track directly from the LINE IN of the soundcard (ie from the mixer of your setup to the soundcard like a DAT recorder)? If so it's just fine. Better soundcards are required only when you want to record tracks separately, and all at once (ie guitar on track 1, bass on track 2, mix on track 3...) because of the numerous inputs of some cards.. but if you really use the PC to record like a tape recorder, a SB Live platinum will be fine. Record in 44.1Khz, 16 Bit, stereo. Sound Forge 4 is great to capture sound by the way

take care

Awsome, yes we plan on just recording the mix straight from mixer to line in of the computer. Later on when I start producing his records, I plan on going with top notch gear. We are trying to start our own record label, hopefully all goes well. Have you ever looked at Pro Tools 5.1? Its free, and its said to be better then Soundforge. I am going to give it a look see and I will throw you a review, but I need your e-mail.

mmhhh.. actually Sound Forge isvery different from PTools... SForge is a WAV editor, and PTools is a DirectTodisk which mutated into a sequencer lately

by the way, the 5.1 is not free... only the LE is free, and without the ProTools hardware, it is not really above the competition.. Pro Tools 5.1 is great when you get a PRO24MIX farm card, or the LE version is correct when you also have a DIGI001 system (quite cheap for what it is).

Have fun man, and hey.. good luck with your label, and your projects. It is great that you are motivated. Keep us updated on what's going on. hehe I think I am a bit off topic

See you later around

CD's all the way. Cheaper, Sound better, and Mano makes a good point as well.

Most promoters I know don't sit at home alot, so the time they like to hear the set from an up and coming DJ is in their car....

My friends and I all have CD players in our vehicles, and CD players are standard in most newer vehicles. If someone hands me a tape, I usually don't listen to it for a few weeks. If someone hands me a Promo CD in a club, I'm listening to it on the way home. (Most music stores don't sell tapes any more)

Tape is quickly going the way of the 8-Track....

It USED TO BE in my area that the best dj sets were on tape, but with the advent, availability, and ease of use of programs like Cakewalk, Soundforge, and n-Track Studio programs, CD is DEFINITELY the way to go.

cd...these days most people carry cd players to listen around.......not tape players......cd's have better track selection instead of having to rewind and ff a bunch...you just press a button.......CD"S all the way
