What DAW are you sequencing with?

If I was using a DAW like Sonar, Cubase, DP, or Logic, then I would choose the Fantom Rack because these programs can utilize instrument definitions (something you would want to set up on your rack to search for all of your patches by name).

If you got something like Live or FL, I would stick with the softsynths. Even though these programs do midi out, I think the older programs has a slightly better workflow and feel when sequencing external midi modules (Originally this was their primary purpose).

The Fantom will excel in things like Brass, String Sections, or what not but the softsynths will probably be better in the synth department.

The major drawbacks of the Racks will be you having to track out your beats (converting midi to audio without a quick bounce method).

Softsynths will tend to have a better workflow (unless your CPU is slow as a whole and low on memory), and be quicker when mixing stuff.

i would go with the plugs.. but it depends.. can your system keep up with the plugs without killing your work flow and stability..

i have z3ta and i love it, i got albino as well and it is DEEP and layering is great, did not try blue yet so i cant comment, philharmonik was real good from what i remember, and i have yet to try any east west stuff.. a little too costly for me and a lot of their stuff have ilok.

halion i have tried but did not like it.. kontakt and their libraries are great imo. especially third party ones, and there are some really good free ones as well.

reason 4 would also be a good suggestion. tons of great sounds, fx, and tons of refills to expand upon

well coming from a softsynth->hardware->softsynth background i can tell you this: It really depends on the power of your computer and the sounds that you want. fantom patches load instantly, software in some cases not so much and it can bottleneck your PC/mac if you dont have enough CPU/RAM. a few years ago i ran into that problem a lot because i love to layer so i went and got a motif ES rack. this was before quadcores became affordable. I got rid of my rack when I bought a quadcore because I could really work just as fast and not worry about performance issues.

with that out of the way, heres my next bit of advice. A fantom has its own sound to it as far as stuff like brass, pads, FX for guitars and such go. you either like them or you dont. some hate the brass and dont think it's "real" enough. Others love it and it's the typical sound you hear in much of the southern rap singles people put out on the radio. The same goes for plugins like Philharmonik, again, you either like their brass/string/orchestral patches (catered more towards realism IMO) or you dont. which ever one sounds "better" to your ears is very subjective so I cant necessarily say go plugins or go Fantom just based on sounds. You should really demo the fantom out, if that inspires you to make tracks and it goes well with your workflow, get it and add on the plugins to complement it at wherever it lacks (ex: Silk for the ethnic stuff, although there is an SRX card for that). you can always sell/trade/take back the fantom after you have bought enough plugins that address whatever it lacks, not so easy if you are exclusively plugins.

FYI the same designers who worked on Fantom's soundbank work with Cakewalk.

So it's very reasonable to compare a Fantom ot Rapture, Dimension Pro, TTS1, and groovesynth's engines combined.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

Really?

Good to know.

I would love to get Sonar it has everything out of the box but I can't think of installing Windows on my Macbook.

I am a nobody.
